A few weeks ago an officer was assaulted and disarmed in his precinct. The suspect punched the officer causing him to fall backwards. The suspect then immediately went for the officer’s #firearm with both hands and was eventually able to unholster it. We tried recreating that scenario from the grounded position and I will preface this by saying that like any other technique or tactic, everything works, and everything fails. The best way to verify if something is effective or not is to pressure test it with good training partners.

If you are stuck on the bottom of the fight, incorporating your legs into the mix so that they are between you and the other person is a fundamental jiu-jitsu principle and critical to minimizing the potential damage from strikes. Placing both feet on the hips and using your legs as wedges can effectively manage the distance (as @renergracie often mentions). An additional benefit of the legs in this position is that they also assist with #weaponretention because the wedges created by the legs can also control the distance that the other person needs to disarm. From there, the opportunity to get on top of the fight is possible with a tripod / hook sweep. Huge mahalo to @kai_ozeki for helping me troubleshoot through this terrible situation to see how it can be improved. Day by day. 🙏🏽🥋🤙🏽 #jiujitsu #selfdefense #training #graciesurvivaltactics #trainweeklyorfightweakly
