Also ground fights were longer and more varied but the sport aspect of Judo just isn't the same.

Jiu-Jitsu was born of Judo. Technique-wise they're not in opposition; but rather complimentary. The competition rules of course are different. But the arts are related. We need to go back (a little) to our Judo roots when it comes to stand up. There's nothing "wrong",  per se, with pulling guard etc.. But that's not how the Grandmasters originally intended for us to fight. They fought their challenge and vale tudo matches trying to be the one on top from the start; and so should we.
