If you’ll note the way I crossed my ankles the moment that I closed the guard: the top leg on top and the bottom leg on bottom. This is actually incorrect. To create maximum compression for finishing a guillotine you should always cross the ankles with the top leg on bottom and the bottom leg on top. I was aware that I did it incorrectly and I would have corrected it had we not rolled over to mount, but I do often wonder if I could have prevented the roll to mount and finished the submission had I applied the guillotine compression correctly from the beginning. Mistakes happen and that’s okay as long as we acknowledge and learn from them. My mistake wasn’t the incorrect technical detail. I knew how it should be done. Instead it was the fact that I tried to cut a corner because it was more convenient. Jiu-jitsu is so dynamic that it doesn’t always allow us the extra few seconds we need to adjust an incorrect technique. We should train ourselves to always execute best practices the first time instead of wasting time and energy on correcting our techniques.
