This was the 2004 @ibjjf Brazilian National Absolute Final against the incredible Marcelo Garcia. I was a brown belt at the time & had been living in Rio for 2 months. Xande & I had just starting training together when I arrived & we were each other’s main training partner leading up to this tournament & the Worlds later that summer. It was my first time to go along every step of the process with Xande & I was in complete awe. From his training, to his composure in every match, & his calmness & ability to smile when discussing his opponents. He wasn’t even planning on doing the absolute until the day of the competition. After watching Marcelo submit everybody & tear through his side of the bracket, I was a little worried. And then Xande did that ? From then on, this became the #XandeSweep

One of the greatest technicians of all time with the skill to play each opponent differently according to his strengths & theirs. His ability to make the simplest moves work at the highest level is mind boggling. Thankful to have learned & shared so much history with this ?
