One of the biggest themes inside the systems I teach on Top Game Devastation is to create a position or situation where the guard player is flat/neutralized & you can pursue passes to all three directions (Left, Right, or down the middle straight to Mount.) The guard player, while under a lot of pressure, has no way to defend all three directions & their reactions become very predictable.

Here you can see me actively working towards the pass in all directions against the very formidable butterfly guard of the warrior Rafael “Formiga” Barbosa. With a guard of his caliber, the first pass will never work, but when you understand my systems, you will not get frustrated when one door closes, because you will always be able to read where the next door opens. Using the shin staples to keep him flat (a huge topic inside Top Game Devastation), I am able to keep changing directions while my opponent blocks my path to mount.
