In today’s BJJ Q&A video I answer a question from a young guy who’s struggling with aggression and anger on in Jiu-jitsu. He says that whenever people are aggressive with him or rough during rolling, he tends to get angry, and it makes him overly aggressive. He says that once he’s in this mode, it’s not a good thing. His technique gets sloppy and so he wants to stop it from negatively affecting his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.

So he sends the message to me to ask if I or any of my students have ever had this problem. And if so, what can he do about it?

The answer is of course yes, it’s happened to me and plenty of my students. And if it’s something that’s happened to you then I hope this video gives you some useful ideas on how to stop the issue.

As always thanks for watching.

In today’s BJJ Q&A video I answer a question from Matt who says he fails to turn up the intensity in BJJ training and gets beat by people who aren’t as large, athletic or technical experienced as him.

He wants to be nice to his training partners in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and has trouble tapping into the tougher side of himself. He also feels bad applying knee on belly or heavy pressure to people.

He’s a BJJ Blue Belt now and becoming more aggressive has been one of his main focuses since White Belt.

So I share some ideas to hopefully help him with his aggression dilemma. If you’re in a similar situation then I hope it helps you too.

In this video I talk about the idea of aggression in BJJ and how it translates off the mat as well. The video was inspired by numerous questions from viewers who say that they either 1. Have too much aggression or 2. Have too little aggression. Most of them speak in the context of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu but also comment on how this has translated over to their life off the mat.

Whether you’re too aggressive or not enough I believe Brazilian Jiujitsu training, as well as other combat sports, offers people a great chance to channel that warrior like energy. They can learn to release the pressure which many people say Jiu-jitsu does. But they can also learn to grow their ability to be firm and forceful should the situation call for it.

This ability to gain control over our mindset is one of the most useful parts of Bjj training.

If you’d like to read the blog article that I wrote which inspired this video use the link below.
Here’s the blog article: https://www.chewjitsu.net/2019/12/aggression-in-bjj-too-much-too-little/

Hope you enjoyed the video and if you have any thoughts on aggression in relation to your training or combat sports leave a comment.

Thanks for watching the video.

How do you balance aggression with caution to keep your partners safe? What I mean is, how do you go for it, but make sure your BJJ training partner doesn’t get hurt?

This is the question I got from our White Belt friend. He got into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu because he feels like he is a push over. And so he is wanting to the develop the ability to be aggressive and physically confident.

But during his BJJ training he gets nervous about finishing the submission. He’s worried he’s going to overdo it and cause his partner to get injured.

In this video I share a simple method that most of us do naturally. But with some conscious effort. You can speed the process up a bit.

Basically you’re going to increase your ability to “feel” the movement by being more focused on it during drilling in your classes.

Meaning, when you go into your classes and during drilling. You want to take time to really focus on the feeling of the submission at it’s end range.

This way when you are rolling. You can be super aggressive and go hard during the roll. But at the point where you’re applying the armbar, choke or leg lock you can cut off the gas.

This will keep your training partners safe without during the Brazilian Jiujitsu without losing your aggression.
