There is a lot of debate in jiujitsu about what techniques are called and proper terminology. Here is my take.

It doesn’t matter…

As long as you can perform the technique and you know what it is and your students know what it is you can call it as you’d like.

Also some gyms may call something a different name so they can call it out in tournaments.

My new gym say #1 sweep and #2 sweep and so on. This was new to me and helped prove my point. I had no clue what they were talking about haha but everyone in their class did.

Shawn told them to partner up and do the #1 sweep and everyone started doing it without asking.

Some affiliations have made up different technique names for every position/submission so they can all be familiar with it.

Jiu-Jitsu has to many funky positions and submissions to name everything. Some of the Names do not even make sense. You will hear a positions like the inside ashi being called the honey hole.

Now some positions are universal like mount, Guard, side control, and others. But for the most part a lot of techniques have like 3 different names. Key lock, American, paintbrush.

When I teach I will try and let my students know all the different names it may be called after I have told them my naming for it.

If I don’t have a name for it than I will just say Choke, shoulderlock, sweep, position.

End rant…. I could go all day lol

What are your thoughts on this?
