In today’s video I answer a question from a new BJJ White Belt who’s struggling to find the balance with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and all of the other activities he does.

He says that he’s already a physically active person who does lots of other activities. And this combined with BJJ is leading to a lot of soreness, fatigue and some injuries.

In the video I’ll share some ideas on abandoning the idea of balance for periods of time in your life. I’ll share how I’ve done it in the past with various physical activities and projects.

The Single Leg RDL (Romanian Dead Lift) is one of the most beneficial exercises for many reasons.

It can help with balance, posterior chain activation and strength, back and leg health, and helps with guard passing for BJJ.

In this video we look at a basic “X-Pass” which has many similar movements and components as the Single Leg RDL.

Although this exercise has many benefits, can be difficult to perform properly. I use a modified approach using a PVC pipe which has been extremely beneficial in training and teaching this movement.

This technique has also been a great benefit in improving my balance, base, and stability with standing guard passing in Jiu-Jitsu.

*** I have just released my new warm-up that was created specifically for grapplers!

The warm-up includes dynamic movements, stretches, range of motion exercises, muscle activation exercises, and a bunch more content that I have used myself and with my training partners to allow for an effective and useful warm-up to keep you healthy and training.

Purchase the complete warm-up product at https://jiujitsutherapist.com/product…

How do you balance aggression with caution to keep your partners safe? What I mean is, how do you go for it, but make sure your BJJ training partner doesn’t get hurt?

This is the question I got from our White Belt friend. He got into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu because he feels like he is a push over. And so he is wanting to the develop the ability to be aggressive and physically confident.

But during his BJJ training he gets nervous about finishing the submission. He’s worried he’s going to overdo it and cause his partner to get injured.

In this video I share a simple method that most of us do naturally. But with some conscious effort. You can speed the process up a bit.

Basically you’re going to increase your ability to “feel” the movement by being more focused on it during drilling in your classes.

Meaning, when you go into your classes and during drilling. You want to take time to really focus on the feeling of the submission at it’s end range.

This way when you are rolling. You can be super aggressive and go hard during the roll. But at the point where you’re applying the armbar, choke or leg lock you can cut off the gas.

This will keep your training partners safe without during the Brazilian Jiujitsu without losing your aggression.

I received a question that really resonates with me. Which is how to balance BJJ training with a relationship.

And in particular, how do you balance a new relationship when you’re trying to train hard.

Like in the case of the person asking the question. How do you balance a new relationship with BJJ training leading into a competition.

This is something I struggled with a lot as a younger guy. In fact I believe I ruined every relationship from the start by now maintaining my schedule and boundaries.

When I would date women I would often struggle to find any balance with a new relationship with training.

This was because I would often slack on my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training during the newness phase of the relationship.

Eventually when I went back to my normal BJJ training schedule. A lot of friction was created with the woman.

And this was understandable to some degree. Because I didn’t really give them a good idea of who I was initially.

In relationships I’m not good with balance. So the way I approach things is simply to do what I want. And then try and find someone who is ok with that.

My girlfriend now, is incredibly supportive and helpful with my training. And I’ve been lucky to have her. And I believe her relationship with me has directly benefitted my life.

And one tip I leave in there is that it may be beneficial to include your significant other into activities at the gym. This way they don’t feel alienated or separated from the gym.

If you’re having trouble balancing a relationship with your BJJ training. I hope this video is helpful!
