Today we’ve got a question from Corey, who is being labeled as a “Sandbagger” in his gym.

He says he’s been training Jiu-Jitsu, on again/off again, for 2 years, and so far, he’s just a 2-stripe white belt.

Recently, lots of his training partners and coaches are telling him he’s ready for Blue Belt. At the same time, his head coach has not talked about this at all.

On top of that, at the recent belt promotions he did NOT get a Blue Belt, in fact, he didn’t even get another stripe on his White Belt.

So, he’s at a loss, because he doesn’t want people to have hard feelings towards him, because being labeled a sandbagger in BJJ is not the best thing to be called.

However, he doesn’t know how to approach his coach about the subject, because he personally does not care much about his belt color or rank.

He asked what I think about the issue & what advice I could give on the subject.

Recently, I got a question from “Thatcoast” on YouTube who asks:

What did you learn as a Purple Belt in BJJ, that you still use the most as a Black Belt in Jiu-Jitsu.

It’s a great question, as Purple Belt was an interesting Belt for me!

As a Purple Belt, there were a ton of different changes going on including my original Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gym being a rather hard-nosed, grimy, Jiu-Jitsu gym.

We were a small gym, competition focused, both for BJJ and MMA. Because of this hardcore culture, we didn’t really get “good” at a ton of techniques. Rather, we were pretty good at what we did, which was very limited in one way or another, and very “tough” (in my case I was basically just a Wrestler and Top Player)

When I got my Purple Belt, because of the type of training I would do at my gym, I went through this phase where I would lose to other Purple Belts at Jiu-Jitsu competitions quiet often.

I was getting SMOKED…

If I did win, I was rarely winning because of technicality.

Eventually I changed gyms, and my new coaches told me that to get my brown belt I needed to EXPAND my game, or there was no chance of a promotion.

I was initially resistant to this, I never learned to “lose” in practice, and this made me plateau. But I eventually overcame this and was able to get promoted.

As a Purple Belt, more than just techniques, I learned how to yield to the process. Learning how to try new things, and learning to lose in practice so that I could eventually win in competitions, and even more importantly learn how to become good at Jiu-Jitsu (not just “tough”)

Today we’ve got a question from “Bob” who says he used to train BJJ in the United States, however he’s currently training overseas.

He says his current gym is great, the training partners are great, the coach is great, the training is great, and so on…

The only problem Bob has with his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach is that they only promote based off of competition experience.

He says he’s not used to this and isn’t sure what to do since he personally does not like to compete in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments.

He’s worried that he could be stuck at his current belt level for years just because he doesn’t compete and isn’t sure what to do.

He sends me the message and wonders what I think about the situation.

I recently spoke with a fellow BJJ coach who recently denied a young guy a promotion to Purple Belt because of his attitude. In particular the young Blue Belt gets very upset when he loses during training. To the point that it negatively affects his training and the environment around him.

And the coach was just curious whether or not I thought this was a good idea and my thoughts on it (from BJJ coach to BJJ coach).

So, in this video I share my thoughts on whether or not I think the coach made the right call with holding the promotion.

I hope the ideas I share in the video are useful to you whether you’re a coach or just someone training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

This was a very special moment in my life, the moment I received my BJJ black belt from my coach and good friend Chewy.

I never thought that I would be able to achieve this type of accomplishment, but I was truly honored and humbled to earn my black belt.

Jiu-Jitsu was something I started out of a curiosity and as something to do to challenge myself. My growth as a martial artist and human being as a result of Jiu-Jitsu has surpassed what I could have imagined.

I waited to post this video as I was trying to figure out and process this day and what exactly it meant to me (I was promoted on 2/25/2021).

I was trying to figure out if I was worthy of this accomplishment, what this meant to me, and I wanted to have some time to feel what it was like and have the chance to reflect on what it was like stepping on the mats and training as a black belt.

I feel like sharing this video gives a glimpse into the immense importance of this martial art to me. The comradery, the family, and the support that I have gained from training is difficult to put into words.

This was one of the greatest achievements of my life. I encourage anyone that watches this video just to keep training and be consistent. Focus on improving yourself everyday.

Thanks to my training partners and my coaches for being an integral part of this achievement. I love this martial art and am proud to be a Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt.

Recently our friend went to another BJJ gym for training recently and he’s been bummed ever since.

During the training session at this other gym he felt like he didn’t know anything. And he knows that he will be up for promotion soon at his gym. But he says he doesn’t want it now.

Basically he says he is a BJJ White Belt who feels like he isn’t worthy of the Blue Belt.

In this video I share my thoughts on his struggle with his upcoming belt promotion and how he feels with his BJJ training in general.

The big idea I try to share in this one is that it’s a mistake to judge your whole experience and enjoyment in BJJ solely off having a tough set of rolls at another gym.

The patterns and styles are different.

I was talking to my guys about this recently. Where I explained that most of my Purple Belts give me more trouble than the Black Belts I compete against. Which isn’t about technical ability per say.
