Here’s the simplest one you can do: just learn to identify the trigger position (3/4 mount), make sure his hands are on one side of your body, and then roll on the other side. There are many details, tweaks, and variations that we’ll cover at some point in the future, but I just want to get you hitting this move so that you learn to believe in it. Let me know how this goes!

BIG NEWS!
My new BJJ Instructional is out.
I recently traveled to BJJ Schwerte where I taught a 2 day Group Private on my Back Game.

Mirco Wendt and the students there were kind enough to let me videotape it and release it on my Selz site.

In this seminar I focused a lot on how to control the back and also how to make fundamental submissions more effective.

And, as with my other instructionals, I try to really provide conceptual frameworks so you don’t just get a bunch of quick techniques with very little detail that you’ll forget as soon as you leave the mats.

If you’re interested, you can find the instructional (and my other ones) here: https://roymarsh.selz.com
Also, I want to give a big thanks to Erkan Mete for filming and to Björn Fiegler for being my Uke.

From the Headcoach of BJJ Schwerte:
“The back control & attack seminar was again an amazing seminar with you and covered lots of details I kind of missed out or did “sloppy“ through my almost 10 years of grappling experience.

Now as I am able to review the seminar again online, it is even better .

I can’t thank you enough, Roy. Of course, as a bjj purple belt I knew “some“ backmount control stuff before, attacks like rear naked choke and bow and arrow choke, you name it, but never in such details and in depth like now after attending the seminar.
It was an eye opener and all of our team could improve our skills and knowledge immediately.

The fundamentals about back control you taught us really skyrocketed our performance on the mat and gave us a deeper understanding of not only how to do certain things, but why!
For example I first learned the rear naked choke in 2010 and hit it for sure hundreds of times in rolling, but now it is 100% tighter and more effective
See you soon for the next seminar.

Mirco Wendt

What’s the most dominant position in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu? In my humble opinion. I think it’s Back Mount.

Even more so I think the most dominant variation of Back Mount is when we have the person flattened out on their belly with our hooks in.

In a fight the person is literally helpless. And in BJJ whether it’s training in the gym or competitions we can attack aggressively for the choke.

In this video I answer a question for Mckenzie who is having trouble finishing from the Belly down back mount.

I show 2 different ways to approach finishing from this devastating position.

With both positions I show how to finish the rear choke. But I also talk about how the position could be used for a fight or match.

If you’re having a similar problem with your Back Mount in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Particularly when you find yourself in the belly down position. Then I hope the video is helpful!

Talk to you guys next time.

Do you ever get to Back Mount in BJJ but then end up losing it and having your opponent come up on top?

This is the question our buddy Armando asked in regards to his Brazilian Jiujitsu training and competitions.

He says that he has been able to get to the back just fine.

But. . .

Once he get’s there he loses it. The person is able to escape and what was going to be a great position ended up falling apart.

So in this video I show some tips on how I like to play Back Mount in Brazilian Jiujitsu.

My favorite style of Back Mount is a bit unorthodox.

I call it Half Back as the legs are a half in and half out.

I also, do not play lying back casually where the person can escape easily. Instead I come up to my elbow to press forward.

This creates a nice push forward on both the hips and the back making it very difficult to escape the position.

I also find that this Back Mount variation really makes my Rear Naked Chokes and other submissions more effective.

1 because the position is not typical.

And 2 because I’m able to hide my choking arm.

If you’re having a similar situation and you’re tired of losing back mount. Try the tips from this video out!

Do you ever get to Back Mount in BJJ but are unable to finish the choke because someone is gripping onto your gi and you’re unable to free your other hand?

This is a common issue with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in the gi. Recently one of the viewers, Nick, had a similar issue and jokingly asked if he should quit gi Brazilian Jiujitsu all together and do 10th Planet BJJ.

I answered the question in one of my Chewy ramble videos:
Watch it here: https://youtu.be/I8AQII5nUC4

In that video I talked about letting go of the frustration associated with grips and just continuing to work hard.

In this video I give some more tactical advice on how to maneuver around the grip while going for the submission in Back Mount.

1. One option is to use your hips and body to break the grip so you can come back in for the choke.

2. Another option I show actually involves choking with 1 arm.

3. The last option involves switching the hips to change the Back Mount position and change the choking arm side to finish the choke.

If you’re having the same problem Nick is having with your BJJ training or competition rolling. I hope this video and the tips in it helps!
