Today we’ve got a question from Corey, who is being labeled as a “Sandbagger” in his gym.

He says he’s been training Jiu-Jitsu, on again/off again, for 2 years, and so far, he’s just a 2-stripe white belt.

Recently, lots of his training partners and coaches are telling him he’s ready for Blue Belt. At the same time, his head coach has not talked about this at all.

On top of that, at the recent belt promotions he did NOT get a Blue Belt, in fact, he didn’t even get another stripe on his White Belt.

So, he’s at a loss, because he doesn’t want people to have hard feelings towards him, because being labeled a sandbagger in BJJ is not the best thing to be called.

However, he doesn’t know how to approach his coach about the subject, because he personally does not care much about his belt color or rank.

He asked what I think about the issue & what advice I could give on the subject.

Thanks for watching.

Today we’ve got a question from Joe who is wondering what BJJ Black Belts/Jiu-Jitsu Instructors watch for when looking at students rolling.

He says that his gym is like most where they do a basic warm-up, drill techniques, then do live rounds.

He says that there are so many times that he wants to work on something new, but he’s scared that this might make him look bad Infront of his coach: because with most new techniques you try, you suck at them initially.

He doesn’t want his coach to think “Damn, he’s not improving and he’s not ready for advancement”

Joe, it would be helpful if you talked to your coach for clarification, but here’s how I view my students’ rolls…

Hopefully, you found this video helpful.

Thanks for watching!

What’s up guys,

Today we’ve got a question from Aaron, who is getting a little older, 49 years old, and he’s had a string of bad luck (ACL Tear, Cancer, COVID, Labral Tear in his Shoulders, etc).

He’s a 4-stripe brown belt but says he feels like an absolute shell of his former self.

He says that when he was a BJJ Purple Belt, he was training a lot more and would decimate this new, 4-stripe brown belt version of him.

He’s worried that he’s not ready for the impending black belt that is soon to come.

He’s wondering if he should tell his coach NOT to promote him to Black Belt OR if he should just take the Black Belt and be happy with it.

Thanks for watching!

Recently, I got a question from “Thatcoast” on YouTube who asks:

What did you learn as a Purple Belt in BJJ, that you still use the most as a Black Belt in Jiu-Jitsu.

It’s a great question, as Purple Belt was an interesting Belt for me!

As a Purple Belt, there were a ton of different changes going on including my original Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gym being a rather hard-nosed, grimy, Jiu-Jitsu gym.

We were a small gym, competition focused, both for BJJ and MMA. Because of this hardcore culture, we didn’t really get “good” at a ton of techniques. Rather, we were pretty good at what we did, which was very limited in one way or another, and very “tough” (in my case I was basically just a Wrestler and Top Player)

When I got my Purple Belt, because of the type of training I would do at my gym, I went through this phase where I would lose to other Purple Belts at Jiu-Jitsu competitions quiet often.

I was getting SMOKED…

If I did win, I was rarely winning because of technicality.

Eventually I changed gyms, and my new coaches told me that to get my brown belt I needed to EXPAND my game, or there was no chance of a promotion.

I was initially resistant to this, I never learned to “lose” in practice, and this made me plateau. But I eventually overcame this and was able to get promoted.

As a Purple Belt, more than just techniques, I learned how to yield to the process. Learning how to try new things, and learning to lose in practice so that I could eventually win in competitions, and even more importantly learn how to become good at Jiu-Jitsu (not just “tough”)

Hopefully you find the ideas in this video helpful to you.

Today we’ve got a question from “Bob” who says he used to train BJJ in the United States, however he’s currently training overseas.

He says his current gym is great, the training partners are great, the coach is great, the training is great, and so on…

The only problem Bob has with his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach is that they only promote based off of competition experience.

He says he’s not used to this and isn’t sure what to do since he personally does not like to compete in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments.

He’s worried that he could be stuck at his current belt level for years just because he doesn’t compete and isn’t sure what to do.

He sends me the message and wonders what I think about the situation.

So, here’s what I have to say…

Today I got a question from someone who has been doing Japanese Jiu-Jitsu for 15 years, holds an instructor rank, and teaches that a bit. He has also been doing BJJ for well over a year.

He says he’s been in the BJJ gym for about 18 months and can hold his own against white belts, blue belts, and even stay alive against purple belts. He’s even placed at Blue Belt tournaments in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

His worry is that he has received no stripes on his white belt, even though he’s seen all the success listed above.

He wonders what I think and how he should talk to his BJJ coach about the subject of stripe and/or belt promotions.

If you’re having a similar situation, then I hope the video is helpful to you!

What does time have to do with a BJJ Belt Promotion?

Our buddy Edward recently sent in a message asking for advice on the subject of what time has to do with belt promotions. He says that he has quickly become one of the best White Belts in his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym after 4 months.

He’s wondering why his coach won’t promote him to Blue Belt.

He says he’s also considering leaving and going to train with his friend who’s a Purple Belt.

In this video I share how I would approach this situation as a Brazilian Jiujitsu coach.

I personally would not promote someone after 4 months. The reason for this is because I want to see commitment from the student and I want people to have time at the top of the pile in their belt level in BJJ.

Commitment is what is necessary to grow in BJJ. Motivation and passion for the martial art can come and go. But commitment is what you need to really stick with it.

And so the reason I believe time is important. 1 is that it helps gives the person more time to train.

But a big reason is that it shows commitment from the practitioner.
