Today we’ve got a question from Shawn, who was recently offered a coaching position at his gym.

The problem is this…

He’s apprehensive about accepting the job because he fears that this coaching situation will rob him of his passion for Jiu-Jitsu.

He essentially doesn’t want BJJ to be his “job”.

He was offered to coach 1 day a week and asked how I do BJJ, but don’t turn it into work or don’t let it burn me out.

This question comes up a ton, I’ve been teaching BJJ full time since 2010, I love it, enjoy doing it, and it wasn’t easy.

I’ll share 1 of my biggest reasons for choosing this occupation and what keeps me around.

I’ll also dive deeper into this idea of internal and external rewards that come from this line of work and hopefully, if you’re a BJJ coach in the making, then you found this video helpful.

Thanks for watching.

This past weekend at the ADCC & CJI events I met a lot of you guys who were new gym owners.

One constant issue that I heard younger gym owners running into was, especially if you were a competitor, was this:

You feel driven to improve your students’ skills but don’t want to let your own skills worsen.

So most young coaches run into this dichotomy of self-improvement & selflessness in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Today I’ll try to give my best solution to this problem, and if you’re a young coach then I hope you found these ideas in this video helpful.

Thanks for watching.

Today we get a question coming from a BJJ White Belt named Scott.

He says that he rolled with his coach a few months ago, just flowing and feeling good about the roll, but a few months later they rolled again…

This time his coach put it on him. Smashed him: submitting him constantly in the round without giving an inch to Scott.

He says that he felt really discouraged after the round, but his coach gave him some serious words of encouragement after the smashing. Still, it stings.

He asked why his coach would beat him up so bad on the practice mats and wonders what he gains from being smashed so badly by his coach?

In this video I’ll give you my perspective about what’s going on, especially if I were the coach in this situation working with Scott (but of course I could be wrong)

Today we have a question about a militant coach who is running people off from his BJJ gym.

Coach Bob says that in his gym he is there to push people to be competitors and to win. He’s there to train, drill, and roll and overall develop a competitive crew.

However, in his experience, this type of attitude affects many practitioners negatively and seems to run people off.

Coach Bob ask how to get people to stick to training, while simultaneously making his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students better.

In this video I’ll discuss what I try to do in these situations and how to handle hobbyist vs. competitors in a Jiu-Jitsu gym.

During one of our takedown BJJ classes. We covered the Clock Choke from the Turtle position. I showed this technique during a takedown class as it can often be used together with a snap down from the feet.

After class one of my BJJ students had a few questions regarding the Clock Choke and the 2 variations we did.

In the video you’ll see some subtle changes from his original choke and the 2nd he did.

In his case, he wasn’t placing proper hip pressure on me. But most importantly. His first grip, the kill grip, was off a little.

Once we adjusted his initial grip. He was set and ready to go.

If you’re trying to use the Clock Choke in Brazilian Jiujitsu. I hope this video helps you in some way.

If nothing else I hope it helps you realize the importance of the first grip. Once that grip is establish in the Turtle position. There are a ton of finishes, adjustments and attacks even if you don’t get the Clock Choke itself.
