It’s exceeded my expectations.

That said, whenever I try something new, I think of it like BJJ technique. You have an idea of how it will work, but in reality, there’s always something that needs an adjustment.

In this video, I’ll talk about the one thing that really needed to be changed, what was good, and more.

Hopefully, I will see more of you guys on the Chewjitsu open mats soon!

Every time Bob has competed, they have lost their second-round match.

They feel exhausted and worn out after every first-round match at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments and can’t wrap their mind around WHY this keeps happening to them.

They say that they can roll all day in the practice room, but get extremely exhausted in actual competition.

Bob asks me how he can prevent this exhaustion and burn out from happening at tournaments.

Here’s what I think.

Recently I got a question from a young guy who said he let his BJJ coach down.

He said that this last he’s been competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and winning tons of gold medals. He said recently, he was getting ready for a competition, one of the biggest ones in the country and leading up to it his teammates and coaches were very confident in his abilities to have success at the tournament.

He goes out to the competition and loses first round, by 2 points, to the person who would eventually go and win the bracket.

He sends me a message saying that “I let my coach down, what do I do?”

I asked him WHY he believed he let his coach down. His reply was “I did not live up to the expectations everyone had for me.”

So, I questioned him. Asking him, based upon which actions from them, his coaches and friends, made him feel like he let them down.

You might be surprised at his response, and honestly, this is probably how most coaches feel. If you’re ever feeling let down about a loss at a Jiu-jitsu competition, then maybe this conversation between myself and the messenger can be useful to you.

The answer may not be as “magical” or interesting as you’d expect. But it could at least make you feel a little more normal.

What I mean is that back in the day I always heard Black Belts are thinking 5 moves ahead, or something like that. Well, maybe I’m just dumb, but I don’t see it like that. Instead, it’s something different which I’ll explain in the video.

Today’s question comes from Chris, a BJJ White Belt, who’s experiencing one of the most common problems new BJJ competitors run into when they compete early on.

He says that in the gym he’s a tough roll with any of the other White Belts, he can roll round after round in his gym and generally feels confident. But whenever he goes to BJJ competitions he’s not able to pull the trigger on his techniques, he gets tired in the 1st couple of minutes in the match, feels shaky and weak in his arms and legs and loses his matches.

Now I replied back to Chris about whether or not he put much attention to his warm up. He said he didn’t and so that’s where I place a lot of focus for this video. Because in my experience the warm up before a match can make or break your performance. And it’s something that experienced competitors pay close attention to while new Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitors don’t.

Hope this video helps you if you’re in the same situation.

Want a little secret to winning more BJJ competitions, hitting more techniques and being smoother on the mats during your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training? It might even help you the next time you’re on a date. . .

The tip? Don’t be needy.

This comes from a conversation I had with a Purple Belt competitor at a tournament recently who wants to be more aggressive since he says he’s more of a slow-starter.

Neediness causes you to get in your way before you even get things going. It creates hesitation and doesn’t allow you to open up.

In the video I’ll share the paralell of how I used to go into my Brazilian Jiujitsu competitions and dates in a similar fashion and how my mindset negatively affected both.

I also go on to share some specific training ideas on drilling that could be useful to you with your Jiu-jitsu game.

Also, if you’d like to get the free ebooks I talked about in the video then click the link below: https://www.chewjitsu.net/focused-jiu-jitsu-13-page-ebook/

Recently one of my newer White Belts competed in a BJJ competition. And while he was competing he made a few blunders with his guard pulling. Par for the course when it comes to a newer competitor trying to hit a technique in the intensity of sport Jiu-Jitsu. What was funny though is as he won the match the people on the other team criticized his techniques because “it wouldn’t work on the streets.”

And this my friend is one of the most annoying things I hear people in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu say about others who are competing in sport Jiu-Jitsu. Because of course, many sports moves won’t work in a self-defense situation or fight. That’s a given. But during a competition we aren’t in a street fight, we are involved in a sport Jiu-jitsu match.

I share my own ideas about the whole self-defense vs sport Jiu-Jitsu thing but I’d love to hear some of the things you hear said about Brazilian Jiujitsu (whether from other BJJ players or other martial arts).

So leave a comment with something people say about BJJ that make you just roll your eyes.

Leave your comments down below and I’ll chime in and chat with you.

Do you ever have feelings of self doubt or inadequacy leading up to BJJ competitions? This is what today’s video is all about.

It’s from Andrew who says that anytime he signs up for a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition or tournament he has these feelings of inadequacy where he feels like he isn’t good enough.

Now this is in complete opposition to what actually happens when he competes in matches. When he competes he wins his fair share of matches and has taken medals in several competitions.

In this video I share how through the experiences in Brazilian Jiujitsu we are essentially forging a new person. If we agree on the idea that the stories and experiences of our past shape who we “think” we are. Then by creating new experiences and stories we slowly change what we think.

I also talk about how in my personal experience and even that of my students, the image of our self and what is reality often aren’t matched up exactly. Usually as you’re improving yourself the image of yourself lags behind a bit until you create new stories and experiences to bring it up to speed.

If you’re in a similar experience to Andrew then I hope this is useful.

Thanks for watching.

When I compete in BJJ tournaments and competitions I’m not really focused on getting the gold medal. Do I want to win my matches? Of course, but I’ve found that when my mindset is fixated on winning or losing, or getting the gold medal, I lose sight of what I have to do to win. Which is COMPETE and use my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu game to the best of it’s abilities.

I bring this up because our friend who is a new Blue Belt send a question in about losing the gold medal/winning mindset.

Basically, he took 2nd place as a White Belt and ever since then he’s been itching to get back after it and have a chance at winning a gold medal. So in pursuit of this goal he’s been training his butt off.

And with only 6 weeks prior to his competition his coach decided to promote him. Now, this would be a great thing, but now he’s worried about competing at a higher level.

He said that he’s lost the “I’m gonna go for the win and the gold medal” to “I’m just going to survive.”

Now we all want to win our matches in Brazilian Jiujitsu tournaments. It goes without saying.

But in this video I’ll explain why I personally don’t like to compete with a fixation on winning.
Hopefully it’s help with your mindset in BJJ competitions.
