In today’s video I share some ideas on how I do belt promotions at my BJJ gym. To illustrate the answer for the person asking the question I share a story about 2 college wrestlers who trained at my gym. 1 got his Blue Belt while the other didn’t. There’s a lot of factors that led to this. But 1 in particular was the reason for withholding the promotion from 1 and then giving it to the other.

Keep in mind, at the time, both people were able to hang with a Black Belt in top positions.

The post Humble Purple Belt Accidentally Dojo Stormed Another BJJ Gym appeared first on jitseasy.

In today’s video I got a question from a young White Belt about whether or not he should up and leave their gym, move away from their hometown to train Jiu-jitsu with John Danaher or Andre Galvao or a similar big name team in order to be an elite level BJJ competitor.

To help out, I share a story from a recent Chewjitsu podcast episode we did with multiple time World Champion (and elite level BJJ competitor) Bernardo Faria where he talked about his start in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Early on he was training in a small town without any famous Black Belts and then eventually won the Purple Belt World Championships. Following that he moved to Alliance and began training with a big name gym.

But it was during the time at the smaller gym that he really developed that love and passion for Brazilian Jiujitsu and training. So in today’s video I share that idea with our young friend.

To develop the passion for BJJ training 1st and consider maybe moving later on should he decide it’s right. But as I talk about in the video. I’d advise against it early on because the look of success can be deceptive. Many people think they want it, but don’t realize what really entails.

I got a question from Operation Random on Youtube about coming back to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training after a 3 month lay off. They say that they’re nervous about returning to their BJJ gym and starting their grappling training over again.

In this video I share a recent story about one of the Black Belts and Purple Belts in my gym who just returned. I share this because layoffs and experiencing some nervousness or anxiety about getting back into Brazilian Jiujitsu is not just a White Belt thing.

When we first start something new there is fear of the unknown. Later on the fear comes from our own expectations.

But either way the fear is imagined and generally the reality of the situation is better than the imagined fear.

The post Even Black Belts Can Overthink Coming Back To BJJ After Time Off appeared first on jitseasy.

Today’s BJJ Q&A video is a little different as it comes from the question of a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym owner who has a student leaving under less than optimal terms. In this video his question is about accepting a student back.

In this video I share a story that started when I was a Brown Belt and ended when I was a Black Belt. It was where I had a friend and a high ranking belt leave the gym to open up another gym.

It happened under less than desirable terms and so I had to tell the student he couldn’t train. Sometime later the BJJ gym he had started closed down and I share how I invited him back.

Every situation is different but I believe people make mistakes and I won’t choose to hold it against anyone if they are willing to move past them.

And as I’ll also talk about in this video. If you’re a gym owner and you have other people in the area talking trash about you. Use that negative energy that’s put towards you to drive you in being a better coach to your students.

Over the years as a head coach and co-owner of a BJJ/MMA gym I’ve learned that. . .

People are cray-zee.

Either that or they watch too many movies.

Like, last Friday I had this guy who wanted to live in the gym and train with me.

He’s planning on going to the UFC and being the champion. Ignoring the fact that he’s in his mid 30s and has never trained before.

Then yesterday I got an email from a person who had requested information about our gym.

After sending him the info, here’s his reply. .

“Laugh out loud. I am trained to be a prize fighter. I do not need orders.

I need amateur fights immediately at 170lbs, and an avenue to quickly go pro at 155lbs. I am 70″ tall, 185lbs, 75″ reach. 11-0 Bjj with one blue belt state title and one blue belt NAGA title. Pure Muay Thai striking (like a actual thai fighter, not this bullshit on tv).

As Connor Mcgregor once said, “I fight at 155 because I have the greatest advantage, without an advantage on height or reach, training is useless”.

The fact that I even sent you an email this long makes me want to run through your roster to prove a point, but it is not worth the potential injuries. I have to protect my fighter lifespan, as I am 30 years old. I cannot take any injuries right now. Period.

Gosh. . . it’s so good!

My favorite part is that he spelled out LOL and ended with “sit on that and respond later”

But sadly I won’t respond later because I believe this poor chap has lost his grip on reality.

A sad state of affairs for such a prize fighter.

But this stuff just isn’t like the feel good movies where anything is possible.

And I’m just not going to blow smoke up someone’s butt and tell them they’ll be the next Connor McGregor. It’s not right.

Got a question about loyalty to a BJJ gym.

Today’s question is from Ethan who is getting ready to start training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and he is wondering if he should should at only 1 gym or if he can train at multiple gyms.

In this video I approach the question from the angle of the fact that the relationship you have with your coach is similar to any relationship. Yes there is a monetary element there. But at the same time, we often become close to our coaches as teachers, mentors, etc.

I know that for me. My BJJ coaches have helped me in far more ways than just my Brazilian Jiujitsu rolling or competitions.

And as a coach I hope to do the same for my students. But I can tell you that if I saw someone who was 1 foot in 1 foot out of the gym. I wouldn’t go out of way to bring them into my fold.

Because just like a relationship with a significant other or maybe a friend. If you don’t feel like they are “all in” then you’re probably not going to be either.

So if you’re in a situation like this. I would ultimately try out both gyms then settle on 1 to be your home gym. I mean you can still train elsewhere here and there. But it’s your home base. And it allows you to grow roots with people and have relationships that benefit you far beyond just BJJ training.

The post Should You Be Loyal to ONLY 1 BJJ Gym? appeared first on jitseasy.

One of the toughest question for a BJJ coach to answer when asked by a student is, “What do I need to work on?”

This seems like it should be an easy question for them to answer. A high level Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner often has hundreds and thousands of techniques stored away in their body ready to dispense.

And this lies the problem. Too vague a question and too many options to choose from.

If you brought your car to the shop and told the mechanic, “Hey can you fix my car?” but you never identifies what was wrong with it he’s going to have some trouble.

But if you come in and say, “Can you fix my car, the brakes are making a loud noise when I use them.”

The mechanic can immediately look to find the issue.

And your Brazilian Jiujitsu coach isn’t different in this sense. They need some specific problems or questions to be of the most use to you.

And so if you want to get better at grappling and you want to approach your BJJ coach with a question.

First you need to put some thought into your game to figure out what you’d like to ask.

With a more specific question your BJJ instructor can be more specific with their answer rather than give you the ole, “Keep training.”
