Recently I posted a video talking about the “let’s go light guy” in Jiu-Jitsu gyms.

Watch it here: https://youtu.be/xKBWrwA2Cdg

Everyone, if you train in Jiu-Jitsu, will have the “let’s go light” conversation that leads into a World Championship level roll (as far as intensity).

This can be extremely frustrating.

Many of you guys commented on that previously mentioned video, saying that you have had the experience. But some of you commented that you are the person who actually does ask the question, however they actually keep their word.

So, how do you approach actually rolling light, after asking the question? and how can rolling light be an effective tool to help you get better faster and help you heal in the midst of an injury caused by BJJ?

I’ll talk about this and more in the video.

Thanks for watching.

Today we’ve got a question from a BJJ Black Belt in his late 30s, Bob, who was training with another Black Belt, who was in his early 20s.

While they were rolling at Jiu-Jitsu practice the Young, competitive, Black Belt caught Bob in an Arm Bar.

As Bob was working to defend, the Young Black Belt tried his hardest to break the grip with 20 seconds left, and all of a sudden Bob tore his peck.

Now, Bob needs surgery & it will be 8-12 months before he’s back on the mats.

He wants to know what my perspective on the situation is, if he should be pissed at the young Black Belt, etc.

In this video, I’ll address this “safe submission” in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that got Bob injured & dive into why I would not call it “safe”.

I’ll also give you guys a training tip that will make you a better finisher in competition & help you keep your training partners healthy when you finish submissions.

Hopefully, you found this video helpful.

Thanks for watching!

The jiu-jitsu world was shaken recently when Jack Greener, severely injured in 2018 while sparring at a San Diego gym, was awarded $46,475,112 dollars by a jury. Rener Gracie testified for the plaintiff, and Clark Gracie testified for the defence. In this episode, I get together with Dan Lukeheart (Brea Jiu-Jitsu) and Alex Kask (Barrister and Solicitor) to discuss…

– The specific technique that caused this injury (the ‘Leo Viera Backtake’),
– Training methods used in jiu-jitsu,
– Who gets to set industry standards in jiu-jitsu,
– Whether white belts should spar,
– How teachers and club owners can protect themselves from being wiped out by similar lawsuits,
– And more.

With excessive gripping in grappling, you can develop tenderness and even tension/tightness in the forearm muscles. This technique of using a Lacrosse ball or roller to address trigger points (tightened/restricted muscles) can be helpful with recovery and reducing soreness.

Its vital to think of this concept in conjunction with an adequate warm-up, stretching, opposing muscle strengthening, and activity modification.

I prefer to do this after training, but can also be utilized before a training session as well.

In this video I show some of the absolute best core stability exercises, “The McGill Big 3.” These exercises were created by Dr. Stu McGill and can be found in his book, “The Back Mechanic.”

Here is a quick explanation of each exercise and my reps and sets recommendations:

1. Modified Curl Up: 1 set, 5 reps, 3-5 sec holds

Lie your back with one knee bent and one knee straight, this puts your pelvis in a neutral position and the muscles of your core in an optimal alignment of pull to avoid strain on the low back. Place your hands under the arch of your low back and ensure that this arch is maintained throughout the curl-up. Start by bracing your abdomen and maintain alignment with the neck and upper back. Pick a spot on the ceiling and focus your gaze there, lift your shoulder blades off the floor and slowly return to the start position.

2. Side Plank: 1 set, 3-5 reps, 10-15 sec holds

Lie on your side and place your elbow directly under your shoulder. With your legs straight, place your top foot on the ground in front of your bottom foot. Maintain a neutral spine and try to keep the back straight (don’t forget to engage muscle around the shoulder blade).

3. Bird-Dog: 1 set, 5 reps, 5 sec holds

Start on your hands and knees with your hands under the shoulders and knees under the hips. Maintain a neutral spine. Lift your arm in front and kick your opposite leg straight back while keeping your hips level (avoid rotation). Return to the starting position and repeat on opposite arm and leg. That is one repetition.

——————–
