Today we’ve got a question from Peter, a BJJ blue belt who was promoted after about 18 months of training.

He then had to take seven months off for shoulder surgery and has been back on the mats for a month now. He’s happy to be rolling again, but he’s running into a challenge.

Before his injury, Peter was focused on developing his open guard and guard retention, but now he feels like people are blasting past his guard, and there’s nothing he can do to stop it.

He asked whether he should focus on rebuilding his previous skills or approach his training like a white belt and start learning new skills from scratch.

Thanks for the question, Peter.

Here’s what I think…

I got a question on Instagram from a BJJ practitioner who suffered a facial fracture and was nervous about getting back to training due to fear of re-injury.

My coach Chewy, (some of you may know him from the @Chewjitsu youtube channel as well as the @ChewjitsuPodcast has some experience with coming back from a facial injury.

Chewy actually got kneed in his nose quite a few years back, which resulted in a nasty fracture requiring surgery and some time off the mats. So I felt that Chewy would have a great take on how you can come back from this type of injury because he has done it and continues to train and win at a high level.

Hope you enjoy!

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I had an issue where I had to take some time off BJJ and had to go to the Emergency room because of that health issue.

Well, today was my very first training session back in about a month and I could feel it. If you’re older and do BJJ you probably know exactly what I’m talking about.

As you age in BJJ you can really tell the difference that a long break makes. I’m not “old” in the sense of full life. But I am for BJJ. That being said, in my mid 30s I definitely don’t recover the same as I did when I was 25.

Anyways, I wanted to share a couple ideas with you guys in relation to getting back to training BJJ after a serious injury, health issue, or whatever else took you off the mat.

Hopefully you find these ideas useful to you.

Recently the Ole Chewster has had some health issues….

With that being said, it’s forced me to take some time off the BJJ mats from hard rolling. And so with that I’ve decided to spend more time in other areas like the gym, specifically with stretching and mobility.

Lots of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners are extremely tight, that includes me. Personally, I have struggled with flexibility my entire life. I’ve never been a flexible guy. And with years of hard training and a few surgeries. My body has some issues.

That said I’ve been correcting some of these issues with a stretching and mobility program I had created for me. In the video I’ll share some of the movements that have helped me out. The stretches and exercises today are focused on knees, hips and ankles.

If you’re struggling with a similar issue, then hopefully these ideas can be useful to you.

Just remember, I am not a doctor, nor am I giving you any medical advice. I’m just showing you what has been working for me.

Go see a professional if you are having any issues.
