Welcome to episode 150 of the BJJ Mental Coach Podcast! Today, I’m joined by Nick Haider, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and the founder of Guardian Project Los Angeles.

Nick’s journey in martial arts began at just 7 years old after being a victim of bullying, which ignited his passion for self-defense. What started as a way to protect himself evolved into a lifelong commitment to helping others through Jiu-Jitsu. Now, as the founder of Guardian Project LA, Nick is giving back to his community by providing underprivileged youth with the same opportunities he once received. Through Jiu-Jitsu, he’s teaching life lessons, building confidence, and shaping the future of the next generation.

Joining me today as co-host is Calder Powers, who was featured on episode 136. Calder is the executive director of the Guardian Project, a non-profit offering free Jiu-Jitsu training to underprivileged youth worldwide.

Jake Watson is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Andre Maracaba, a Junior Golden Gloves Boxing Champion and a 3x Amateur Muay Thai National Champion. He is 26 and He has competed at the highest level of BJJ, being ranked #5 in the -88kgs Division on the FloGrappling Worldwide Black Belt Rankings.

As a broadcaster, Jake has actively worked as a Play-by-Play/Color Commentator, On-Air Host, Ring Announcer and Interviewer for over 40 different shows in the past 3 years.

At one point in the episode, I asked what sparked him to get involved in the field of commentator announcer, and his answer inspired me to title the episode: “Let your irritations inspire you.” If you’re listening to the audio version, stick around for my final thoughts on the episode, where I explain why I chose the title.

Sam Crook is a first-degree black belt, 4-time IBJJF Black Belt National Champion, 4-time British Champion, and the Jiu-Jitsu head coach of the nonprofit organization FRANCIS NGANOU FOUNDATION in the Village of Bati, Cameroon, Africa.

His cousin encouraged Sam to start his jiu-jitsu journey to lose weight, and as a result, he began an impressive story that has led him around the World;

Sam has trained from London to Rio making stops at multiple places in between to capitalize on world-class training, all while competing as much as he could.

Since 2019 Sam has been a volunteer instructor for the Francis Ngannou Foundation. The social project aims to utilize martial arts as personal development tools, especially jiu-jitsu, and a way out poverty.

Quem é Gustavo Dantas?

Gustavo Dantas, 47 anos, é faixa preta quinto grau do mestre André Pederneiras e, atualmente mora em Phoenix, Arizona há mais de vinte anos, aonde se localiza a sua academia. Gustavo é autor, palestrante e criador do movimento The BJJ Mental Coach, que ajuda os atletas a se prepararem psicologicamente para situações sob pressão dentro e fora dos tatames.

Formado em Educação Física pela UFRJ, com especialização em Mental Coach e Life Coach, ele compartilha sua experiência de 30 anos de Jiu-Jitsu com a comunidade do esporte mundo a fora.
Entre vários títulos conquistados, Gustavo foi campeão Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu adulto da IBJJF na faixa roxa e marrom, campeão Mundial master faixa preta e competiu no ADCC em 2001 e 2003.
