Who you roll with really matters — especially as an older grappler. The wrong partner can cause injuries and setbacks, while the right one helps you stay on the mats for years.

In this clip, black belt instructor Marc Barton shares Tip #1 from his Top 5 Tips for Older Grapplers video. A former emergency medicine doctor who started BJJ at 30 and earned his black belt at 40, Marc now trains and teaches full-time at 49 — stronger and more resilient than ever.

Recently I posted a video talking about the “let’s go light guy” in Jiu-Jitsu gyms.

Watch it here: https://youtu.be/xKBWrwA2Cdg

Everyone, if you train in Jiu-Jitsu, will have the “let’s go light” conversation that leads into a World Championship level roll (as far as intensity).

This can be extremely frustrating.

Many of you guys commented on that previously mentioned video, saying that you have had the experience. But some of you commented that you are the person who actually does ask the question, however they actually keep their word.

So, how do you approach actually rolling light, after asking the question? and how can rolling light be an effective tool to help you get better faster and help you heal in the midst of an injury caused by BJJ?

I’ll talk about this and more in the video.

Thanks for watching.

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I had an issue where I had to take some time off BJJ and had to go to the Emergency room because of that health issue.

Well, today was my very first training session back in about a month and I could feel it. If you’re older and do BJJ you probably know exactly what I’m talking about.

As you age in BJJ you can really tell the difference that a long break makes. I’m not “old” in the sense of full life. But I am for BJJ. That being said, in my mid 30s I definitely don’t recover the same as I did when I was 25.

Anyways, I wanted to share a couple ideas with you guys in relation to getting back to training BJJ after a serious injury, health issue, or whatever else took you off the mat.

Hopefully you find these ideas useful to you.

Recently the Ole Chewster has had some health issues….

With that being said, it’s forced me to take some time off the BJJ mats from hard rolling. And so with that I’ve decided to spend more time in other areas like the gym, specifically with stretching and mobility.

Lots of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners are extremely tight, that includes me. Personally, I have struggled with flexibility my entire life. I’ve never been a flexible guy. And with years of hard training and a few surgeries. My body has some issues.

That said I’ve been correcting some of these issues with a stretching and mobility program I had created for me. In the video I’ll share some of the movements that have helped me out. The stretches and exercises today are focused on knees, hips and ankles.

If you’re struggling with a similar issue, then hopefully these ideas can be useful to you.

Just remember, I am not a doctor, nor am I giving you any medical advice. I’m just showing you what has been working for me.

Go see a professional if you are having any issues.

In this video I discuss an important concept in improving performance and reducing injury risk known as “Load Management.”

What is load management you ask? Well its pretty much the “burden” or stress you put on your body.

There are 2 types of load that you can put on your body: External (how long you train…minutes and days) and the internal load (the physiological effects, or how your body feels).

Too much load can lead to injuries and too little load won’t stimulate the body enough to promote strength changes and won’t improve performance.

—————————————

Stiffness and tightness in the mid back (Thoracic spine) is a common issue due to the positions of Jiu-Jitsu as well as every day life that includes extensive sitting among other activities that forces our spine to round.

This can lead to a rounded posture, decreased mobility, and general stiffness in the mid back which can impact neck, shoulder, and low back function.

In this quick series, I show you exercises that I focused on after I experienced tightness in the mid back after BJJ class.
