<p>Today I wanted to discuss a situation everyone, well most people, in Jiu-Jitsu have experienced.</p>
<p>If you have NOT experienced it yet, you definitely will!</p>
<p>This situation occurs from the &#8220;let&#8217;s go light&#8221; guy.</p>
<p>This person will occasionally lurk in your gym, open mats, or whatever, and they will deceive you.</p>
<p>Essentially, this person will ask you to roll with some stipulations. They&#8217;ll either say they just competed, they&#8217;re hurt, just got back from a vacation, etc. And this means they want a light roll.</p>
<p>BUT&#8230;</p>
<p>When the roll starts, they&#8217;re anything BUT light. You assume the training will be a flow, technical exchange, and anything but a hard round, but it turns into a mat war.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll talk about this common bamboozlement, and how I deal with them. I&#8217;ll also share some of your experiences as viewers that sent them in.</p>

<p>What&#8217;s up guys, </p>
<p>Today we&#8217;ve got a question from a young fan who has been doing Boxing &#038; Jiu-Jitsu for about a year and he says that sparring makes him panic. </p>
<p>He&#8217;s anxious about the various potential injuries and asked me if I had any ideas on how he can overcome these feelings because he wants to be a successful martial artist.</p>
<p>He thinks overcoming this fear of injury will help him outside of martial arts with various things and so he sends the message above&#8230;</p>
<p>What this young man is going through is normal &#038; natural.</p>
<p>Many people who train in Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing, or any other Martial Art have this sinking feeling of anxiety, this pit feeling in their stomach, because of potential injuries.</p>
<p>In this video, I&#8217;ll discuss my own experience and how I think you can start overcoming it.</p>

<p>Today&#8217;s video is going to be a rolling video of my Purple Belt, Dakota, and I rolling at a Costa Rica Jiu-Jitsu camp.</p>
<p>Dakota is a fun roll, super technical, and has a cool story. Before he started training BJJ he was 30% Bodyfat!</p>
<p>Of course, it was more than just BJJ that helped him get to where he is now, but it&#8217;s always cool to see the progress people can make in a relatively short amount of time.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll see both of us look for passes, sweeps, and submissions. In general, it&#8217;s a pretty fun flow level roll.</p>

<p>Today&#8217;s video is a short Q&#038;A video from Origin&#8217;s BJJ Immersion Camp in Maine. During the sessions this week I got a chance to speak with hundreds of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioners who watch the videos, listen to the podcasts and so on. If you&#8217;re one of them, it was cool meeting you! </p>
<p>A couple of blue belts came up to me asking questions about their grips burning out and getting tunnel vision during their rolling. After listening to their situation, I gave them some simple advice. Something that helped me with my BJJ. </p>
<p>Now the advice is very simple and can be applied by anyone from white belt to black belt. But it doesn&#8217;t make it easy! Like anything else in BJJ, you have to put things into action with practice. </p>
<p>So, if you struggle with your grips burning out during BJJ competitions and rolling, then I hope the video helps.<br />

<p>Today&#8217;s BJJ rolling video is from a recent class I taught at the gym. We&#8217;re going through some fundamental stuff related to takedowns in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and then had open rolling. </p>

<p>Today&#8217;s video is a reply to a comment I received about rolling with people in BJJ who are working around injuries. </p>
<p>True story, some of my best BJJ techniques have come from relaxed rolling with injured training partners. Seems crazy right? In the video I share a great example from 2019 that helped me be a more effective grappler and even win a gold medal at a competition because of a specific grip I learned during an injured roll. </p>
<p>I also talk about why this is kind of a secret to training as a an older Black Belt.</p>
<p>Hopefully the idea I share in the video serves you well if you or 1 of your training partners is trying to train around a particular injury in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.</p>

<p>In today&#8217;s Chewy ramble I answer a cardio question from a young BJJ White Belt who represents a common type in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. He&#8217;s someone who was a bit of a couch potato who then decided to get into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (after watching videos and hearing podcasts on it). So far, it&#8217;s been great! </p>
<p>But he says he gets exhausted whenever he rolls and wants some tips on how to improve his cardio for rolling. He says he can&#8217;t train more BJJ with his schedule. So he&#8217;s looking for cardio training he can do off that mat, that will support his training on the mat. </p>
<p>In the video I&#8217;ll lay out 2 simple types of exercises to incorporate off the mat to support your rolling. </p>

<p>In today&#8217;s rolling video you&#8217;ll see 3 rounds from a BJJ rolling session. </p>
<p>00:00 Roll with Purple Belt (sweeps &#038; kimura defense)<br />
01:22 Play Leg Lock Round with White Belt<br />
03:54 Roll with Black Belt (back and forth sweeps)</p>
<p>The 1st one is with one of my Purple Belts. When you watch the roll you&#8217;ll see a mixture of Butterfly and Half Guard being used. The next round is a playful leg lock round with one of my young White Belts. We had some fun scrambles and eventually I got the submission. The final round was with one of our Black Belts at the gym who has a crazy tough guard to pass. You&#8217;ll see him score a nice sweep on me and forced me to work my way back on top. </p>
