In today’s video I’ll be reviewing a couple options to defend the double stack pass.

One of my guys was having trouble defending it today in class, so I thought I’d share what we discussed here too.

This is a pretty common pass in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, both Gi and No-Gi. In fact, it’s also one of my personal favorite passes.

With that being said, every BJJ technique has counters and defenses & I wanted to show you a few of my favorite options here.

Getting stacked sucks. So, hopefully there’s a few ideas here that you find helpful.

This video I go over in my opinion the single most effective guard passing system in jiu jitsu. Its so easy to force your opponent to this position, once you get to the strong inside leg position your opponent has only a few options. Most common response from your opponent will be to control your ankle and play the de la riva guard. Once you learn the basics of the normal and reverse leg drag, the knee cut and folding pass, and the de la riva smah, its very difficult for your opponent to defend. If you like this content be sure to comment and let me know what you would like to see in future videos.

The Double Unerhook pass is one of the most foundational passes in jiu jitsu, so it is extremely important to have a good defensive plan against it. This video I go over the main ways your opponent will try to attack you with this pass and a basic defense against each one. The stack pass defense fundamentally very different than most pass sequences so a lot of common defensive techniques will not work the same.

“When i was a blue belt, i asked Royce how to escape the triangle. He said don’t get triangled. Just like the meme says. Pissed me off. Then many years later i realized he was right.

Greg and Spenser taught the stack pass all the time. We learned it and practiced it, but i was always looking for a different answer. Then the seminar that i got my brown belt Royce taught the stack pass. Challenged anyone in the room to triangle him.

That was the day i decided that i had to get good at it!”
– Black Belt Jake Whitfield
(http://graciegoldsboro.com)

I’m not saying not to learn advanced techniques or don’t prepare for contingencies (“what if”s).

But, if you master solid foundations and basic principles then that solves most of the problems you’ll encounter.

A good example is in last night’s class, I told my students that if they keep their hands up and elbows in then that will solves 90% of your problems.

You don’t have to learn how to defend all the headlock variations if your hands are already in a position to intercept the headlock attempt.
