Some systems and positions in #jiujitsu are truly timeless, as @lovatojrbjj mentions—cross leg/pants passing is one of them. Widely used in the ’90s and still highly effective today, this passing system has evolved with even more refined variations.

Dealing with this style of passing is no easy task, especially against an experienced passer with strong pressure. The earlier you recognize and address the pass, the higher your chances of successfully defending it.

In this video from our 10 AM advanced class at @gdjiujitsuacademy , I break down a specific scenario for defending this pass and share a competition clip to illustrate it in action.

You’ve heard me talk about the connection between Positional Awareness & Reaction Speed, and in this footage, @rolando_samson showcases world-class timing in executing this transition.

I hope this helps! Share it with someone who could benefit from these details.

So, this past weekend at the ADCC trials (the Olympic trials of BJJ), I was talking to a young guy, and we were chatting about what we were seeing at the tournament & what we’ve been seeing in general amongst recent BJJ competitions.

He asked me what I thought the new “Meta” was in Jiu-Jitsu.

Another young guy came up to me and told me the Meta right now is “this/X” position/technique.

I told both of these guys that, in my opinion, there is no meta right now, but there is a trend set by the medalist at this year’s trials.

I’ve been around the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/grappling world for upwards of 20 years and you’ll see new positions pop up, give a short-lived advantage to early adopters of said technique, and will be recycled through over the years.

A lot of these techniques are taken advantage of more in certain rule sets like ADCC favors turtle defense, therefore you’ll see a more vast and unique level of back takes in that ruleset.

Rulesets often incentives grapplers to be extremely efficient for said ruleset, which is why certain techniques will pop up, die down, and reappear in that ruleset.

But If I had to say there was a “Meta” (a trend) I would say that (if looking at podium winners) being a well-conditioned & fit athlete is a very obvious key to being successful.

Anyways I’ll go over this idea a little deeper in the video. Hopefully you found the ideas in the video to be useful, if not at least interesting.

Thanks for watching!

What’s up guys,

Today I’ve got a question from Max, who says he keeps getting caught in the Anaconda Choke in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The Anaconda choke is a choke that starts from the front headlock, usually after some sort of snap down or fail shot attempt by the bottom man (the person defending the attack).

In this video I’ll talk about some pretty basic defense to this choke & even show a counter that comes from Wrestling that can work pretty well in BJJ too.

This counter, if done properly, will put you into a good/dominant position in the roll/match after you successfully perform the technique.

Hopefully this answers your question Max, and if any of you guys were struggling in this area, then I hope it helped you out too.

Submissions are potentially the best way to control and subdue someone, whether it’s grappling competition, MMA or a street fight. However, there are ways to apply submissions that may be good for certain contexts, which could be very dangerous if you apply them the same way in a fight with no rules. Hope you find this helpful.
