Years ago, when I was a brand-new kids’ BJJ coach, a mother brought her son to train with us because he was getting bullied at school.

She had originally enrolled him in Taekwondo, but that program was basically a glorified daycare that handed out belts without teaching real skills. Despite being there for nearly eight months, he still couldn’t defend himself—and the bullying hadn’t stopped.

So, she brought him to our Jiu-Jitsu gym. After about six weeks of training, he went back to school, and the bullying came to an end.

I’ll go deeper into that story—and also share another one about a fake BJJ black belt I called out.

The reason I bring this up is because I recently posed a question in response to my Derek Moneyberg video: What is a real black belt?

A lot of people responded with “Who cares?”
And honestly… I don’t think that’s the right mindset.

In this video, I talk about the importance of symbols—and how they hold meaning in many areas of life. In BJJ, the black belt is one of those symbols. But too often, its meaning gets downplayed.

Today’s video question comes from a BJJ Black Belt who said he feels McDojo.

He said at his previous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym he achieved a black belt in 7 years based off attendance. Now, he trains at a new gym and isn’t up to the skill of the BJJ practitioners there.

At this point the black belt is ruining his Jiu-jitsu training and completely sucking the fun out of it for him. To the point where he went from 4-5 days a week at his old gym to 1-2 days at the new gym, and if he does train he only does no gi so he doesn’t have to wear the belt.

I share some ideas for “Bob” in the video and if you’re experiencing a similar issue I hope it helps you as well.

Recently I had 2018 IBJJF World Champ Mahamed Aly out to our gym to train and do some videos.

Along with all the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training we did at my gym Derby City MMA.

We also got together for some weight lifting.

Since we both had finished a Brazilian Jiujitsu session. We didn’t go very heavy.

Instead we were doing some technique work on Olympic Weight Lifting. Namely the Snatch.

And afterwards we did a bunch of ab exercises. This part wasn’t really planned.

You really get a sense of what kind of freak athlete Mahamed is when you see a 230lbs man moving around on the rings and bars.

It was impressive.

During the Olympic lifting portion we were guided by my buddy Joe who is the head coach for our Strength and Conditioning program along with his coach Joe who is big into olympic lifting.

Joe also works for Uesaka barbell.

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this Vlog with Mahamed and I just messing around.

This was from my second No Gi BJJ training session leading up to the 2018 No Gi Pans in St Louis. It was another tough one!

I met up with again with Kyle, Nick, Jeff and Junior for some tough No Gi BJJ.

By the way, it’s worth noting that all these dudes medaled at the No Gi Pans this past weekend. They’re all tough as nails and I was wiped out after training with them.

The Brazilian Jiujitsu training session begins with some passing and sweeping rolling.

Then afterwards we moved on to some rounds where the focus is on who scores 1st.

Oftentimes it’s the person who scores 1st who wins. And so it’s important to strike 1st in your BJJ competitions. So the drill was simply that. Both people working hard to get the 1st set of points.

It’s a great way to help prepare for BJJ tournaments when you need to fire off quickly in your match.

Afterwards we continue our Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training with some regular rolling .

During the rolling you’ll see me pass, sweep and take the back. You’ll also see me get taken down, passed and swept.

The guys I’m rolling with are all tough Brazilian Jiujitsu practitioner. Almost all of them seasoned Black Belts. So they’re very good. And I had to work hard. Hence why there is so much butt sweat at the end haha.

And I think my training with them definitely helped me win the 2018 No Gi Pans at the Ultra Heavy Master 1 division.
