Today I talk with Matt Kirtley, better known to many as ‘Aesopian’, about recent changes to jiu-jitsu culture, crazy martial arts cults, channeling of ancient spirits, how we can get more out of drilling, red flags that you’re in a jiu-jitsu cult, and much more

I met Matt ages ago when he published step-by-step breakdowns for the reverse omoplata and the rolling crucifix attack on a forum which I then republished (with permission) on Grapplearts. He’s good people!

He is a jiu-jitsu black  belt who has been heavily involved in online jiu-jitsu culture for 15 years.   He writes extensively at Inverted Gear, has helped answer hundreds of BJJ questions for White Belt Wednesdays, and is a Functional Range Conditioning coach.

Hélio Gracie : October 1, 1913 – January 29, 2009) was a Brazilian martial artist who, together with his brother Carlos Gracie, founded the martial art of Gracie jiu-jitsu and with Luiz França and Oswaldo Fadda the martial art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ).
According to Rorion Gracie, his father Hélio is one of the first sports heroes in Brazilian history; he was named Man of the Year in 1997 by the American martial arts publication Black Belt magazine.
A patriarch of the Gracie family, he was the father of Rickson Gracie, Royler Gracie, Royce Gracie, Relson Gracie, and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Co-founder Rorion Gracie, among other sons and daughters.
According to one of his most notable opponents, Masahiko Kimura, Gracie held the rank of 6th dan in judo.

“Kayron Gracie’s Invisible Armlock Surprises”

Nesse video Kayron demonstra o seu supreendente “Armlock Invisível”.

Kayron Gracie é o filho mais velho do Mestre Carlos “Carlinhos” Gracie fundador da Gracie Barra. Kayron começou a competir no Jiu-Jitsu aos 9 anos de idade, e desde então acumulou vários títulos importantes representando o escudo vermelho: Campeão Mundial Sem Kimono em 2007 na faixa roxa, Campeão Mundial em 2008 na faixa marrom, Campeão Pan Americano em 2010 na faixa preta, entre outros.

Kayron Gracie nasceu dia 04 de maio de 1988 no Rio de Janeiro e quando Kayron tinha 17 anos, se mudou para os Estados Unidos, onde continuou a competir, enquanto começou uma carreira como instrutor no quartel general da Gracie Barra nos Estados Unidos localizado em Irvine na Califórnia. Hoje Kayron tem a sua própria escola em Mission Viejo na Califórnia.
