In class recently I was teaching what my BJJ students and I jokingly call the Spoon Choke. Which is just a rear naked choke that ends in the “spoon” position you might be in with a your significant other. And one of my White Belts asked a good question. Is position before submission a myth?

She asked this because the position we were attacking from is not part of the Big 3 most commonly awarded points in competition and focused on during training. These Brazilian Jiu-jitsu positions being Mount, Back Mount and Side Control with Knee On Belly being used as well.

I told her that position before submission is not a myth. Our ability to dominate position gives us the ability to control our opponents effectively and setup a submission with predictable effectiveness.

That said, there are submissions everywhere in Brazilian Jiujitsu and they don’t happen only after you gain dominant position.

In fact, for me one of the things I’ve found that has been helpful for back mount is by attacking the submission early, even before I establish the hooks and everything.

I still have dominant position even if it’s not the normal positions we are accustomed to.

By doing this I catch the person off guard while they’re fighting for position and I am able to secure the submission.

Check out the idea and maybe it will be useful to you.

What’s the most dominant position in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu? In my humble opinion. I think it’s Back Mount.

Even more so I think the most dominant variation of Back Mount is when we have the person flattened out on their belly with our hooks in.

In a fight the person is literally helpless. And in BJJ whether it’s training in the gym or competitions we can attack aggressively for the choke.

In this video I answer a question for Mckenzie who is having trouble finishing from the Belly down back mount.

I show 2 different ways to approach finishing from this devastating position.

With both positions I show how to finish the rear choke. But I also talk about how the position could be used for a fight or match.

If you’re having a similar problem with your Back Mount in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Particularly when you find yourself in the belly down position. Then I hope the video is helpful!

Talk to you guys next time.

Do you ever get to Back Mount in BJJ but then end up losing it and having your opponent come up on top?

This is the question our buddy Armando asked in regards to his Brazilian Jiujitsu training and competitions.

He says that he has been able to get to the back just fine.

But. . .

Once he get’s there he loses it. The person is able to escape and what was going to be a great position ended up falling apart.

So in this video I show some tips on how I like to play Back Mount in Brazilian Jiujitsu.

My favorite style of Back Mount is a bit unorthodox.

I call it Half Back as the legs are a half in and half out.

I also, do not play lying back casually where the person can escape easily. Instead I come up to my elbow to press forward.

This creates a nice push forward on both the hips and the back making it very difficult to escape the position.

I also find that this Back Mount variation really makes my Rear Naked Chokes and other submissions more effective.

1 because the position is not typical.

And 2 because I’m able to hide my choking arm.

If you’re having a similar situation and you’re tired of losing back mount. Try the tips from this video out!

Looking for some BJJ Drills to take the Back for your training? Check out these 4 BJJ Drills I use in this video.

Unlike some of my other BJJ drills videos. You get to come along for the ride with my students as if you were present for one of my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes.

In this video I show 4 different drills to build up your ability to be a Back Taking Machine.

The 1st Drill in this sequence of movements and techniques is a Near Side Back Take from the Double Under Pass.

The 2nd Brazilian Jiujitsu technique / drill is the Up and Dump pass to a Hip Switch Back Take. Which comes from the Double Under Pass.

The third Back Take option comes from the Turtle Position when the person tries to roll and we roll with them to snag the Back Mount.

The 4th one. Which is fun one. Uses the lapels and a side roll to whip around and take the Back Mount.

All 4 of these are very simple and practical options to throw into just about anyone’s BJJ game. And hopefully the idea of keeping continuous movement as shown in the video will give you some ideas for other positions, techniques and drills for your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Training.

Hope you enjoyed the video!
