Yesterday I received a question from our friend who says he lacks the motivation to train Brazilian Jiu-jitsu some nights.

He says that a lot of times after a long day of work he struggles to get the energy together to workout and he’s wondering what I do to keep myself motivated.

In the video I share that I’ve never really needed motivation to workout. Whether it’s Brazilian Jiujitsu or lifting. I’ve never required motivation to train.

And this is because it makes me feel so good, and I don’t need to be motivated to feel good.

We do all sorts of things in our life that make us feel good. Eat, sleep, take pills, etc. And it requires little motivation most of the time to do them.

With exercise it’s no different. It makes me feel amazing after I’m done.

Even if I have a terrible training session or feel weaker than normal. I always feel good after the training is over.

I also share some details about a cool book I’m reading right now that explains all the chemicals that release in the brain and the physiological responses associated with exercise.

I mention the book in the video and you can check it out here.

Spark : https://amzn.to/2GNBz5V
* This is an affiliate link. So if you purchase the book it helps support the videos and Youtube channel. I hope you enjoy the book.

If you’re struggling with motivation. Discipline is helpful. But enjoying what you’re doing and knowing that it’s going to make you feel better is always helpful.

Talk to you next time.

This video is based off of one of my recent Instagram posts which was inspired by my experiences in my own life. Both on the mat and off the mat.

I can’t tell you how many times in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Wrestling or in other aspects of my life where this message rang true.

I believe this is the way it is for most of us. We’re our own biggest enemy.

There’s so much brilliance inside of us but we can only realize it when we get out of our own way and make it happen.

Here’s the original post:
There’s a special moment of relief at the end of a training session or competition.

As your coach gathers everyone together for one last huddle to finish class, or the ref raises the hand of the victor.

You realize. . . the struggle is over. You did what you set out to do and the white flag of your enemy has been raised.

But the enemy is not your opponent at the competition or your training partners. . . It’s yourself.

A battle had been waged and won that day, an internal siege had been lifted. As the army of your own anxiety, harsh judgments and laziness was beaten back.

Defeated were the thoughts of skipping training, sitting out another round or avoiding the upcoming competition because deep down you were afraid you’re not good enough.

Regardless of the outcome of that days training or competition. What matters is you conquered yourself.

And tomorrow the forces of your own shadow will reappear. As they do everyday. Ready for another battle and looking for a weakness in you.

But where there is a shadow there is a light.

And that light comes from the strength, intelligence and intensity inside you.

Embrace the suck, take joy in these daily battles, whether on or off the mat.

Because everyday you choose to follow your heart and take action is a day the enemy inside you becomes a little weaker, your light a little bigger. . . your shadow a little smaller.

I hope you guys enjoy the video!

Do you ever lack motivation for BJJ training? If so, how do you overcome it? What keeps you motivated.

I recently received a couple of BJJ questions related to motivation for training.

1 from Zach, a BJJ Blue Belt who is having some of the Blue Belt blues and is lacking motivation for training.

The other from Perk Kar on the Chewjitsu Instagram, who said, “lack of motivation how do we overcome it?”

In this video I do my best to share the idea that motivation is not what you need to keep training consistently.

Most people think of motivation as some sort of divine spark that is supposed to hit you and propel you forward to do the thing that you know you need to do or that you want to do.

I personally hate that spark and find a different type motivation far more useful for long term consistency.

In this Chewy ramble video I share the idea of creating your own motivation for BJJ training. You can become a powerhouse of motivation.

But it’s not something that magically comes to you. Instead you create it by taking action and moving forward towards whatever it is you want.

If you’re talking about Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.

Make a ritual and schedule. And stick to that damn thing. If there is a secret to getting better and staying motivated. It’s keeping your disciplined habits and schedules together.

Having the structure to fuel your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is far more helpful than any spark for training motivation. Because you wield it. . . it’s yours.

And instead of being so dead set on some long term goal. Your goal should be your rituals and schedule. Keep them alive and enjoy the little victories and the big ones will come.

Hope this video helps you get into the gym and train your face off!
