Today’s we’ve got a question from a follower who we’ll call “Bob”.

Bob say’s that it’s a bit embarrassing but sends it anyways.

Bob has been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for several years now, but they feel so much anxiety and nervousness when it comes to rolling with better people, or bigger/stronger people, even though they’re 230lbs themselves.

They say a lot of times when they go against these type of people, they build them up to be much more than they actually are, even if Bob is bigger than this person.

They say during rolls that they’re “fight or flight” kicks in and they tend to only roll with the smaller people because they “hate feeling powerless, hate being submitted, and hate being scared of rolling with the bigger/better/stronger guys.”

He sends me the message asking, “any idea on how I can be less scared rolling with these bigger/stronger guys?”

I actually choose to answer this, versus many other questions I received, because I have personally dealt with this.

We’ve all got some mental baggage.

Mine is anxiety and I have had to find strategies to deal with it. This means anxiety with Jiu-Jitsu is something I had to deal with a lot too. This was true for practice and competitions.

In this video I’ll give you guys a few things I did to keep the anxiety out of “the driver’s seat” that really have helped and continue to help me a long my BJJ career.

Hopefully this helped you out Bob, and hopefully this helps anyone else out there that feels like they’re dealing with something similar.

High School Wrestling causes a lot of the same competition anxiety that Brazilian Jiu-jitsu tournaments do.

Our buddy Walker who is involved in Wrestling and also loves Brazilian Jiujitsu is having trouble with the anxiety and nerves. So much so, that he is questioning whether or not he should continue to Wrestle the next 2 years in High School.

In this video I give some tips that I learned through my own experience in Wrestling in High School. It’s mainly one idea that concerns finding your reason why. Why are you doing the thing you want to do?

Finding my Why has helped me in BJJ, Wrestling, MMA and several situations in life.

This video is a little long. But I tried to really give you a sense as to who I was when I was younger and how much I’ve changed. And how really holding onto an idea and making it almost an obsession can really change you.

So whether you’re having trouble with nerves, anxiety and stress from BJJ, Wrestling or Mixed Martial Arts. The video is relevant and I hope it helps you conquer your nerves.

Thanks!

Who is Gustavo Dantas?

Gustavo Dantas, is a fourth degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu entrepreneur from Andre Pederneiras. With nearly 20 years of coaching experience and being a World Class competitor, Gustavo is a Public Speaker as well as Certified Mental & Life Coach with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from UFRJ (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro). Gustavo left Brazil in 1999 with a couple thousand dollars, two bags, and one teenage dream: to have his own 100% Jiu-Jitsu Academy and make his living through the passion of his life, Jiu-Jitsu. The Gustavo Dantas Jiu-Jitsu Academy was established in Tempe, Arizona on March 6th, 2012, re-enforcing the statement, “Believe in yourself, believe in your dreams. Hard work pays off”.

Gustavo was the Jiu-Jitsu coach of the Mixed Martial Arts Gym, Arizona Combat Sports for eleven years, where he achieved his 2-0 MMA Record. During that time, Gustavo started the mission of promoting Jiu-Jitsu in the State of Arizona, becoming the vice-president of the Arizona State Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation and turning a small, 40 competitor, “in-house” tournament in 2001 to an impressive 800 competitors in 2016, helping Arizona to be recognized as one of the Jiu-Jitsu power houses in the United States.

Well respected in the Jiu-Jitsu community as well as a great competitor, coach, and human being, Gustavo, who is also the Co-founder of the non-profit organization Live Jiu-Jitsu, continues to build champions on and off the mat in Arizona, and he hopes to spread out his coaching philosophy to more Jiu-Jitsu practitioners around the World for years to come through his program “Inner Discovery for Outer Success”. “I want to help people to perform to the best of their abilities and reach their full potential on and off the mat. I struggled with performance anxiety before, and I was able to overcome it using the techniques that I share at my program. These concepts, fundamentals and techniques helped me, and I believe this program can help others too.” stated The BJJ Mental Coach, Gustavo Dantas.
