Today’s question comes from Chris, a BJJ White Belt, who’s experiencing one of the most common problems new BJJ competitors run into when they compete early on.

He says that in the gym he’s a tough roll with any of the other White Belts, he can roll round after round in his gym and generally feels confident. But whenever he goes to BJJ competitions he’s not able to pull the trigger on his techniques, he gets tired in the 1st couple of minutes in the match, feels shaky and weak in his arms and legs and loses his matches.

Now I replied back to Chris about whether or not he put much attention to his warm up. He said he didn’t and so that’s where I place a lot of focus for this video. Because in my experience the warm up before a match can make or break your performance. And it’s something that experienced competitors pay close attention to while new Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitors don’t.

Want a little secret to winning more BJJ competitions, hitting more techniques and being smoother on the mats during your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training? It might even help you the next time you’re on a date. . .

The tip? Don’t be needy.

This comes from a conversation I had with a Purple Belt competitor at a tournament recently who wants to be more aggressive since he says he’s more of a slow-starter.

Neediness causes you to get in your way before you even get things going. It creates hesitation and doesn’t allow you to open up.

In the video I’ll share the paralell of how I used to go into my Brazilian Jiujitsu competitions and dates in a similar fashion and how my mindset negatively affected both.

I also go on to share some specific training ideas on drilling that could be useful to you with your Jiu-jitsu game.

In today’s video I got a question from a young White Belt about whether or not he should up and leave their gym, move away from their hometown to train Jiu-jitsu with John Danaher or Andre Galvao or a similar big name team in order to be an elite level BJJ competitor.

To help out, I share a story from a recent Chewjitsu podcast episode we did with multiple time World Champion (and elite level BJJ competitor) Bernardo Faria where he talked about his start in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Early on he was training in a small town without any famous Black Belts and then eventually won the Purple Belt World Championships. Following that he moved to Alliance and began training with a big name gym.

But it was during the time at the smaller gym that he really developed that love and passion for Brazilian Jiujitsu and training. So in today’s video I share that idea with our young friend.

To develop the passion for BJJ training 1st and consider maybe moving later on should he decide it’s right. But as I talk about in the video. I’d advise against it early on because the look of success can be deceptive. Many people think they want it, but don’t realize what really entails.

Have you ever looked at some of the higher level people in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and wondered if you could get to that point with your competition abilities?

This is the question from our friend George who is new to BJJ and wants to become a high level BJJ competitor. But his worry is that he is too old. He’s 18.

In this video I share the fact that I think it’s more than possible for him to become high level in Brazilian Jiujitsu if he goes after it. But ultimately what I think doesn’t matter.

What matters is that George takes action towards what he wants. That’s the only way he will find out if he can truly be a good Brazilian Jiujitsu competitor.

I also touch on the mental block that seems to be coming with our friend.

In this video I’m sharing one of my BJJ rolls with my Brown Belt buddy Kenny from Nashville.

He’s a super tough Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitor who’s won and placed in some really big tournaments and I always enjoy getting a roll with him.

He’s another big guy who likes to get after it, so it’s always fun.

I wanted to share this video because many of you have asked for full rolls. And I think it also illustrates a great example of someone rolling at a good pace.

But not trying to kill one another.

At the end of the video I show him some of the moves that I was using during our roll like the side control escape and underhook fighting from Half Guard.
