In this video I talk about the idea of aggression in BJJ and how it translates off the mat as well. The video was inspired by numerous questions from viewers who say that they either 1. Have too much aggression or 2. Have too little aggression. Most of them speak in the context of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu but also comment on how this has translated over to their life off the mat.

Whether you’re too aggressive or not enough I believe Brazilian Jiujitsu training, as well as other combat sports, offers people a great chance to channel that warrior like energy. They can learn to release the pressure which many people say Jiu-jitsu does. But they can also learn to grow their ability to be firm and forceful should the situation call for it.

This ability to gain control over our mindset is one of the most useful parts of Bjj training.

If you’d like to read the blog article that I wrote which inspired this video use the link below.
Here’s the blog article: https://www.chewjitsu.net/2019/12/aggression-in-bjj-too-much-too-little/

Hope you enjoyed the video and if you have any thoughts on aggression in relation to your training or combat sports leave a comment.

Thanks for watching the video.

Want a few tips on finishing the Triangle Choke in BJJ whether you’re a tall lanky person or a stocky thick legged person? Then this video should be helpful to you!

Recently my good friend, training partner and “little brother” Chad Hardy was in town teaching a seminar at my gym. And while he was here I wanted to do a video with him. And if you know anything about Chad, he’s got a killer triangle choke. And he’s got a ton of tricks on finishing it.

In this video we use our buddy Chris as the uke and Chad and I show different options to help you finish your Triangle Chokes. We show them from the vantage point of being a little shorter with thick legs. I’m not short by any stretch. But I’m also not blessed with long legs. I actually have a fairly long torso.

Then Chad comes in and shows how a tall lanky person in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu could finish the submission and gives a few easy to implement details.

If you’d like to see more of what Chad is up to, head on over to his channel at:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuauqeukQLtUrucpitF4OGQ

While we don’t go over any setups, I think that anyone who gets into the Triangle position but is unable to finish will find some helpful tips in this video. They’re easy adjustments you can immediately throw into the mix.

Hope this video is helpful!

Have your ever rolled with someone outside of a traditional Brazilian Jiu-jitsu background?

Maybe someone who has done MMA, Sambo, Wrestling, Judo, etc?

If so then you know that they grapple a little different

A different sort of cadence or style of rolling.

I found this out during my White-Purple Belt days where I began to be introduced to MMA training and would roll with people who only learned grappling through MMA.

In many cases I would get caught with submissions even through my knowledge of grappling and Brazilian Jiujitsu was superior.

Because their style and rhythm of grappling was different than mine, I had to adjust. Because where BJJ players typically fight more for position, they would just go crazy for submissions.

And I believe this is partly due to the fact that when you use grappling in and MMA situation. You have to have a sense of urgency with your techniques.

In today’s video I discuss this idea in response to our friends question who is struggling with a situation at an open mat where he feels a bit taken back by the people inside the gym.

If you’re ever grappling with someone outside of a traditional BJJ gym, then I hope this video is useful for you!

In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, there is typically a grip needed to finish a technique. Whether this is a Choke, Armlock or whatever.

Oftentimes I find that if I’m very focused on getting that finishing grip quickly, my success with the technique shoots up dramatically.

For instance if I’m doing a choke.

If I get what I call the “Kill grip” I’m usually able to finish the technique.

When I say “Kill Grip” I’m speaking about the the grip that’s essential to finishing the technique I’m looking for.

In this video I answer a question from Max who says he’s having people tuck their necks and defend his submission attempts with chokes during BJJ training.

So in this video I discuss the getting the best grip quickly for whatever technique you’re looking for during rolling or competitions.

The big focus with chokes is to get the deepest grips in the collar or around the neck possible. This way the person doesn’t have a chance to stop the submission.

I hope the video is helpful with your Brazilian Jiujitsu training or competitions.

I recently got a question from a BJJ practitioner who is at a new gym and is struggling with her ranking.

She says that she’s a 3 stripe White Belt. But her BJJ training has been broken up a bit. And she also says that this particular Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym is very tough.

Her question is how to deal with the feeling of false advertising when she’s in the gym with her belt.

She has 3 stripes on her White Belt but she doesn’t feel like a 3 stripe BJJ White Belt.

In this video, I talk about a situation where I felt very similar as a Brown Belt.

I had gone down to train at a really tough gym and by the end of the 1st night I felt like I was being an imposter.

But I was able to get over the mental block and make the most of my time by taking on the mindset I did when I was a fresh new BJJ White Belt myself.

I hope this video is useful for you if you’re in a situation like this. Where you go to a Brazilian Jiujitsu gym and feel like you don’t measure up.

Have you ever competed right after a new BJJ belt promotion? This is what happened to our friend C who is competing on the tail of his recent belt promotion.

He says that essentially he’s nervous and doesn’t want to look like an idiot.

He says his coach even offered to take back the promotion but he declined saying he doesn’t want to be a sand bagger.

In this video I start by explaining that every single BJJ competitors or practitioner that we respect has all lost. Everyone has lost! Period.

I go on to share about my transition from White to Blue Belt in BJJ leading up to my first BJJ tournament at that level.

I go on to share about how I use the anxiety leading up to a fight or BJJ competition to fuel my training to make me better.

Whether you were recently promoted or if you’re just looking for some tips on getting ready for a Brazilian Jiujitsu competition that has you super nervous.

I hope this video helps!

This series of stretches are some of my go-to exercises for improving neck pain, decreasing neck tension, and improving neck mobility. As we train Jiu-Jitsu, we constantly engage our muscles that allow for shrugging of the shoulders to fight off chokes and submissions.
Also everyday sitting tasks such as working on the computer can cause major postural dysfunction. This series of stretches are some of the absolute best and most effective to stretch the neck muscles, reduce pain, improve range of motion, and keep your neck healthy for BJJ.

Hip Impingement also known as pain in the front of the hip when moving the leg and especially bringing the knee towards the chest is problematic for many reasons. The closing on the joint space can lead to compression, pain, and tightness.
Using the monster band to perform distraction is a great way to get a more effective stretch for the joint capsule.
This is a great technique to improve hip motion, decrease hip pain, improve guard retention, and improve overall healthy hip function.

BJJ practitioners deal with injuries frequently. Hip injuries can be a both annoying and very limiting injury to deal with. The importnce of strong, mobile, and flexible hips is crucial for hitting submissions and maintaining or regaining guard. My training partner had pain in the outer hip and asked for a few suggestions. He has been performing the exercises consistantly and has had excellent results, improved hip motion, and most importantly improvement in pain levels. Give some or all of these stretches and exercises a try. They will help improve your hip health and mobility. Make sure to perform exercises to comfort and discontinue if you have any pain. Send and questions below and I would be happy to try and help and may use your question for an upcoming video.
