The Americana gets a bad rap these days for being a low-percentage submission. That basically just means you don’t currently see it hit often in high-level competition. But ultimately, the Americana / ude garami / double wrist lock (lots of names for it) is a valid and powerful submission. It just needs some details.

In this video, we look at setups and finishing mechanics for this arm lock, as well as common mistakes that prevent it from working at higher levels. I hope this is helpful, regardless of your experience with this submission.

However, after being on the giving and receiving side of it, I’ve found it not only to be useful, but a great initiative for submissions and transition opportunities.
