It was an honor to get to collaborate with Shane Fazen of FightTIPS recently in a seminar at Fit to Fight®️ in Charlotte, NC along with Ryan Hoover as well. It was also great to get to make a couple of videos with him like this one here.

This is a progression from the beginning of a defensive situation versus someone swinging a sucker punch. Shane shows a very effective strategy to cover and crash the range into clinch and I show options off the guillotine.

This tip is absolutely crucial to finishing a tough opponent.

Not everyone is going to just give you a tap as soon as you lock something in. It takes a consistent squeeze to put someone away. I’ve been teaching for years now and this is one of the biggest problems I see with inexperienced grapplers.

You will see/feel them squeeze really hard for three seconds or so than they release the pressure. Than they squeeze again and repeat the cycle until they are gassed out.

Be sure to keep this tip in mind while attacking your chokes.

The brawl that broke out after the main event at UFC 229 was a disgraceful display of revenge and lack of discipline. This is something that I feel obligated to discuss, being an advocate for true martial arts.

To me, martial arts is all about self-control.

No, I am not taking sides nor do I feel any need to. Did I see Conor throw the first punch? Yep. Do I remember him attacking the bus? Of course. Did he slander the Nermagomedov family name? He did. But does that justify Khabib’s actions? You mean is revenge a good motive? No, in fact I think the best way of defending your family’s honor is by settling it mano a mano, legally, in a cage in front of millions of people. He settled it at 3:03 of round 4. “But his emotions got the best of him,” supports will say. That’s exactly my point.

Martial arts is about self-control.

Student Creed:
I intend to develop myself in a positive manner and to avoid anything that would reduce my mental growth or physical health.

I intend to develop self-discipline to bring out the best in myself and others.

I intend to use what I learn in class constructively and defensively to help myself and my fellow man, and to never be abusive or offensive.
