In BJJ everyone wants to be more offensive and hit more submissions. It’s fun! In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu nothing feels quite as good as a well-timed submission. And so today’s question comes from a White Belt who said he’s defense is good but wants to turn up the offense now.

So in this video I’ll share 2 things. #1 I’ll share something that will destroy your ability to be offensive on the mats against similarly skilled opponents. #2 is a simple idea to eliminate this problem and how to become laser focused on your offensive techniques and submissions.

Now, I won’t lie to you. The idea is super simple. But it’s effective. It’s something I still do to this day. And when I think of all my best students and friends in grappling, they do the same thing.

So anyways. . . Hope the video gives you some useful ideas to assist you with your training.

BJJ Question from Adolfo. Here’s what he asks. . .
==========
Chewy, sometimes online I hear Black Belts suggest, “Train with intention” what exactly does that mean to you? I’m never really clear what that means.
==========
When you hear a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black Belt say train with intention it’s very simple. It just means stepping onto the mat with a purpose or focused on something.

Oh and for the record, 9 out 10 Black Belts will probably agree that it’s a damn good suggestion. The 1 that doesn’t is probably McDojo. Now the intention could mean a ton of different things. . .

Your intention could be to hit the new technique you’ve been working on or to avoid getting smashed from a position you struggle with. Your intention could be to not get frustrated while your stuck in an uncomfortable spot during a roll.

Heck, it could even be to make sure you roll with the tough guy that you avoid during rolling because you’re scared of losing.

Just depends on what you’re focused on at the time.

For me, when I roll with a focus on a specific technique, my intention always starts with grips. I ask myself, “what do I need to make this technique work?” and I work for those specific grips.

And whether I’m competing or rolling I’m hyper focused on getting the grips I need. Because if I get the grips, I get the techniques. That’s the way it works.

I mean, when you breakdown BJJ to a granular level, it’s all about the grips and body positioning. Every technique begins with grab this and this. It’s the reason a person that controls grips wins the roll or match.

This is why I put together a course all about grip fighting. #1 to give you specific techniques to break and dominate grips. But just as importantly to get you to adopt the mindset of a grip fighter.

A grip fighter is someone who doesn’t accept someone’s grips and fights for their own. Just this mindset can give you a skill boost to any position.

And if you’d like to give your grip fighting skillz a boost then grab onto the link below and check out my Get a Grip course.

www.Chewjitsu.net/Grips

To wrap this one up to.

Set an intention for your next training session. And if you can’t train BJJ right now then set an intention on your next lift, run or whatever you’re doing to stay in shape.

Talk to you next time.

Probably one of the biggest questions all BJJ newcomers have when is, “What should I focus on?” And with all the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu techniques out there it’s a good question. It can be overwhelming trying to decide on which specific techniques and positions to focus on.

But in this video I’m going to lay down a pretty good rule for you. This is something I’ve done since I was a BJJ White Belt and continue to do as a Black Belt. I also implement this idea into training my students with a lot of success.

So let’s jump into it.

When it comes to Jiu-jitsu. When you’re up against someone of similar skill, you’ll probably spend the bulk of your time passing guard and trying to sweep or submit from the bottom. Early on this will mostly be full guard or maybe half guard if you have short legs. Maybe you’ve never really thought about this before but I promise you if you think about it you’ll see this as accurate.

If you go watch any of my matches you’ll notice most are won this way. If I’m able to pass the guard I generally win. If I get the sweep I generally win.

This is true for most BJJ players. And the reason for this is positional control.

Most BJJ players live and die by the mantra “position before submission” and this is what it really boils down to when we are talking about guard passing. If the person can pass guard they control the position. If the person can retain their guard and use sweeps and submissions effectively, they control position.

Now there is still another whole battle to be fought once you’re in a dominant position. But winning the guard passing battle (on top or bottom) is what puts you in that dominant position first. So it is always a good place to focus on no matter what level you’re at.

Hope the talk is useful to you. Thanks for watching the video!

Can you get better at BJJ training only 2 days a week, or are you wasting your time?

This is a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu question I received from Instagram.

The person asking this question is training No Gi BJJ and has a ton of other interests. In general he’s just a fitness fanatic.

Because of all of these other things on his plate. He’s wondering if he’s wasting his time training 2 times a week of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

In this video I talk about how people mimic the extremes of BJJ like high level competitors. And it’s not in alignment for their goals.

BJJ competitions and grappling competitors are fascinating. And their performances inspire us.

And in turn, we enjoy emulating this style of training. Regardless of whether or not we intend to follow that same path.

And in the the case of the person who asked the question. He has a ton of other goals and interests. So it only makes sense that he would not be as invested into BJJ.

And I try to explain why training twice a week is not a waste of time and how it can even be beneficial for your training because it can create better focus.

If you’re in this situation with you’re training. I hope this video is helpful! Thanks for watching.

And don’t let competitions and the excitement of it shame you or make you feel guilty.

The open Guard can be a frustrating position for the passer if you do not know how to deal with it properly. I am a big fan of standing passes. With my body frame it is easier for me to keep distance from my opponents legs. If you are littler it is a way to out speed your opponent. Compare to a low pass the requires the pressure, balance, and strength.

Be sure the entire time you are standing to really focus on breaking the grips. getting dominant grips is how you win in jiujitsu . Every position I get in I really have to zone in on getting the dominant grips of the position.

The main focus for this video is to Find your distance and timing the way your opponent moves their hips and legs. I like moving side to side because I can see the way they are reacting to the movements. Than I will just pick a pass and if it doesn’t work I will bail out and restart .
