The maxim in Jiu-Jitsu is typically “Position Before Submission” which is generally the best advice. However, when you understand the rules well enough, sometimes you can break them with successful results. In this video, I show about 4 exceptions to this rule in the form of submissions that work from inside the opponent’s guard. Leg Locks and Foot Locks are gaining a lot of popularity in BJJ, MMA and Submission Grappling – especially when you are hitting leg locks from standing. It gives the grappler another option to attack a foot lock instead of passing the guard.

Vlad Koulikov has a viscous straight ankle lock for BJJ and MMA. The foot lock setup is the key, and the bite he gets on the ankle lock is very, very tight.
