Today we’ve got a question from Edgar, who asked me “Which option is better for real self-defense cases, Gi or No Gi BJJ?”

While reading the comments, many people swayed hard to one side or the other.

The Gi people said their version of BJJ was the best, while the No Gi Jiu-Jitsu players said their side was more practical.

One team says you’ll never fight naked people, and the other says you can’t rely on the grips of the Gi in real life.

There’s a ton of dogma around it and I’ll illustrate to you guys what I think about this with a particular hypothetical situation.

Hopefully, you found this video helpful.

Thanks for watching.

Today, we have a question from Andy, who loves no gi BJJ and is wondering if training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the Gi is necessary.

He says:

“I’ve been training for 6 months. I really like BJJ, I currently train both Gi and No-Gi. Doing each 3 times a week. But, as I keep training, I really like No-Gi. But the Gi Days are starting to feel like a chore. Is there a good reason to keep doing the Gi? Do I have to?”

According to him, his goals are MMA, Fighting, etc.

If he were to ask me this question 10 years ago, I would’ve given you a certain response. Things like “Yes, the gi makes your BJJ more technical” and so on.

But a lot has changed since then, and I’ll dive deep into that while trying to answer your question the best I can.

Thanks for watching. If one of you guys is having trouble with this, too, I hope you found this video helpful.

Switching to no gi grappling can be difficult. Here are 5 steps that will make it easier… 1) Accept that No Gi is an inherently faster style of grappling and be prepared to push the pace harder at times, 2) Change your grips so that they aren’t gi dependent, 3) Get rid of your gi dependent guards and start developing guards that work in no gi, 4) Learn how to take the back, maintain the back and submit from the back because it’s the best position in no gi grappling, 5) Develop your leglock and guillotine choke submissions because those are much more prevalent in no gi than in gi.

If you would like some more help developing your gi and no gi games then here are a couple of FREE resources for you…

Grab my free app for iOS and Android devices that comes with more than 457 minutes of technique taught by BJJ black belts. More info here: https://www.grapplearts.com/masterapp

Download a free copy of my book, A Roadmap to BJJ, which will take you through the most important positions and transitions on the ground. Get that here: https://www.grapplearts.com/book
