Nothing good happens if you let your opponent control your legs in jiu-jitsu. Here’s how to use the cross lapel grip to shut that nonsense down. From https://www.grapplearts.com/gripfighting

There’s a cheat code that allows most people to jump up a full belt level almost overnight.

You don’t have to become bigger, faster or stronger…

You don’t have to learn how to contort yourself into a pretzel…

And it applies to both gi and no gi…

So what is it? Easy: improve your gripfighting!

If your opponent can’t get a good grip on you then it’s almost impossible for him to pass your guard.

And if you control the grips then the ball is in your court and you can attack at will.

There’s just no other skill that gives you as much bang for your buck in jiu-jitsu as gripfighing. This is something that everyone does at the elite level, but the skill itself is rarely taught in jiu-jitsu class!

And that’s exactly why Rob Biernacki and I created the Gripfighting and Kuzushi Formula. More info at https://www.grapplearts.com/gripfighting

Cheers
Stephan

This video I discuss three main aspects of defending the over under pass. The first and most powerful tool is a strong side tilt position before your opponent enters the guard. This makes it extremely difficult for your opponent to get in deep on the position. The second is a proper frame and knee tuck to prevent your opponent from getting over the knee line. Lastly learning to drag your opponents head to the other side is the final block vs a deep over under.

I play a lot of butterfly guard because I always trained with bigger people and it was a way to keep their weight off of me and to get on top.

So, I’m always looking to get a hook in whenever I can if I’m playing open guard.

I cover my thoughts on the problems he presented in his pass and how I approached dealing with them.

How to prevent and defend the Torreando guard pass by BJJ black belt Thomas Lisboa. The Torreando is probably the most common guard pass in which your opponent controls your lower legs at the feet or knees with his hands and then steers your legs one way while passing to the other side. This pass was originally done with a tossing motion, but nowadays (and especially in the gi) most people typically retain control of the knees and use a steering wheel motion to push your legs out of the way while they either drop their shoulder onto your belly or come around to knee mount. In this video you’ll learn 3 counters to this pass that will work both with and without the gi.

This video I discuss Guard Retention and Proper Body Positioning. When you have no grips and defend off of your back I prefer to have a tight crunch position as it reduces the elbow knee space gap for your opponent to pass into, but one common problem people have is this leads to being exposed to stacks so it’s important to learn to defend both of these passes which for me usually turns into alternating how I position my body based off of what kind of pressure my opponent is putting on me.
