Old for what?

How many times have you heard someone say: “I’m too old for this”?

But old for what, exactly? Competing? Challenging yourself? Evolving?

When I started competing in the ’90s, things were very different. If I’m not mistaken, at the very first Brazilian Nationals in 1994, the Masters divisions only went up to what we called Senior 1 (today’s Master 2 — 36 to 40 years old). That was it.

Fast forward to today: IBJJF already has divisions all the way to Master 7 (61+)… and soon, Master 8 (66+) will be a reality. Why? Because so many practitioners are proving that age doesn’t mean slowing down — it means adapting, learning, and still showing up.

I’ll be 51 in a couple of months, and honestly, I never imagined I’d still be pushing myself on the competition mats at this age. Yet here we are. The sport is evolving, and so are we.

So the real question is: Old for what?

It’s wild how the negative voice in our heads—what I call the dark passenger—often doesn’t even allow us to dream big. The moment you think about stepping into a new challenge, that voice shows up with doubts, excuses, and fear.

You’ve got to stand up to that mental bully and commit to pursuing your authenticity—that’s the keyword for me.

In my book Inner Discovery for Outer Success: 10 Rules to Integrate Authenticity and Performance in Jiu-Jitsu and Beyond, Rule #1 is all about discovering your Why.
Why do you want to fly high? What are your intrinsic and extrinsic motivations?

For me, my strongest intrinsic motivation is the pursuit of authenticity.

They’re the first two kids from our Jiu-Jitsu Tribe social project —founded over a decade ago—to travel internationally! This is more than a competition; it’s a symbol of hope for hundreds of kids training across multiple locations in their community.
