Head Inside Single Leg High Finishes Part I

When you are facing a strong defender, it can be hard to finish the head inside single leg from the low position. Especially if your form is off and you are bent over.

Instead, take the high ground by pulling the leg out from between your legs and up to your chest. Now their balance is much more compromised, and your posture is much stronger. You can still the same basic finishes such as the back trip, back sweep, and running the pipe from the high position, and many more.

One thing to keep in mind is the control of the ankle. If you are just wrapping around the ankle like a guillotine, a skilled opponent will twist away and kick out. You have to secure the ankle by controlling the big toe.

Sweep Single Leg

Back in High School, the Sweep Single was one of my favorite take downs. I loved to be able to utilize my speed here, and the best part is that you don’t eat a hard sprawl if you goof up. It’s another take down that attacks balance instead of power, which makes it a good move for those that aren’t built like Brock Lesnar.

I used to call this the Rome Slap, after Wade Rome used this to take me down in our shoot fight together back in 2000. Since then, a lot of people have called this the GSP Slap, as he has also used this to great effect in the Octagon. It has everything a good take down needs: simplicity, violence, and control.

Similar to the far side tackle, the Barsager is another way of scoring a finish off the head inside single leg. Think of it like a head inside double leg. We use a similar back step pull like we did with the far side tackle, but this time we are going to hoist up the leg and drive across him. Often times with a good enough pull when you get the far leg you can just sweep them off their feet. If not, you just bull doze them over.

This is a finish that I came up with on my own, as I tend to use the single leg often. This is a simple finish, with the goal being to get your opponent to hop into you and bring his legs close together. The moment he does, that is when we tackle him by slamming or shoulder into his body as we wrap around his knees.

The go to finish of the head inside single leg is to run the pipe. It’s simple, but people still get it wrong because of the small details.

The main trick here to avoid spinning around in circles is to focus on digging your shoulder over the top of their thigh. Our goal is to drive their hip down, not spin them in circles. Securing the ankle helps to ensure the take down finishes, and it adds a bit of a knee bar pressure as well.

The Head Inside Single Leg is one of my favorite take downs. It is very versatile, can be used against both bigger and smaller opponents, and can even be used to attack leg locks. To start this series, I’m working with the basic entry from the double bicep tie.

One thing a lot of people struggle with is driving from a head inside single leg. They keep the drive leg to perpendicular to the ground, which results in standing straight up.

Instead, you want your drive leg at a 45 degree angle, so that when you drive, your are pushing your head into your opponent and causing them to step back. This takes the weight off you when standing up and forces the opponent to balance, which is why it can work well with heavyweights.

Snatch Single Leg from the Under Hook

The Snatch Single is a great take down for people who don’t like to expose themselves to risk. Dropping to your knees can be dangerous, as you expose your head to chokes, head locks, and strikes that can end you.

The Snatch Single avoids all that by keeping you on your feet and simply “snatching” your opponent’s leg off the ground. As I have gotten older, this has become more favorable for me and my chitty chitty bang bang knees, lol!

The Under hook comes in really handy for this setup, as you will already be under your opponent’s arms – which is the major obstacle in all shots. Check it out!
