HARPOON SWEEP BJJ

The HARPOON SWEEP is one of the more creative ways of scoring 2 points for a sweep in an IBJJF rules competition and looks great on your highlight reel.
This video shows the sweep only and finishes with the sweeper in side control. There is also an option to roll for an ompolata on the left arm. It’s a lot of fun to practice in training and feels awesome when you hit the sweep in the gym or at a competition : )

Carl Fisher is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and is the chief instructor at Checkmat Wimbledon in London. Carl has been involved in martial arts for over 25 years and holds Dan grades in Karate and Traditional Jiu Jitsu and also trains in Judo, Sambo and Thai Boxing. In addition, Carl has over 20 years experience on the front line in the Security industry and has had the pleasure of pressure testing his skills on a weekly basis in pubs and clubs up and down the UK.

On October 23, 1951, Helio Gracie faced Masahiko Kimura who outweighed him by nearly 80 lbs. It was the first time that a jiu-jitsu world championship match would be held outside of Japan. Kimura was so confident of victory that he declared that if Helio could last for more than 3 minutes, he should be declared the winner. After 13 minutes, Kimura caught Helio in the shoulder lock that, today, bears Kimura’s name. Helio wouldn’t tap, so Carlos Gracie threw in the towel forfeiting the match to the Japanese giant. His loss to Kimura was consider one of the greatest victories of Helio Gracie’s career.

A month later Terra won the American Nationals, one of the biggest Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in the world, and proved that his victory at the Las Vegas Open was not just luck. That being said, the 2010 Las Vegas International Open was the first time a rooster weight or someone under 130lb won a BJJ championship at a major league/federation – IBJJF.
