Butterfly guard has the potential to be the best position to initiate sweeps, and it also a potentially target rich environment for setting up submissions and transitioning to other threatening positions. Today’s technique question comes from Jesse who wants a high percentage Honeyhole Entry for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. In this video I show an entry from Half Guard. Now Honeyhole goes by other names like sankaku, saddle, etc. It’s a great position for setting up heel hooks, kneebars, straight ankles, slicers and all sorts of leg locks.

Even before I started playing much with leg locks in BJJ I liked the position. It has a ton of submission options from it and does a good job of protecting your legs against their attacks.

For instance with a position like 50/50 in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Both people have the ability to attack with a submission. With the honeyhole position it’s much more difficult. It’s not to say that there aren’t things you can do. But it’ just more difficult.

In this video I show my favorite and one of the more high percentage entries I started using early on. The best part about this technique is that it works off of someone doing the right thing inside of half guard.

Today I have a BJJ back take when someone sits back to honeyhole/saddle position for leg locks. The move is a bit surprising if you haven’t seen it and will definitely grab some attention.

In this video I show a back take I’ve been working on recently. If you’ve watched some of my most recent BJJ rolling videos you’ve seen it used in action.

After getting several requests from people I figured I’d share it with you.

The back take happens from the Saddle / Honeyhole / Sankaku position. Jeez, so many names to symbolize 1 position. Anyway, that’s where the back take starts. It starts with the person sits back to attack your legs.

In the video I give a couple of details on the technique and also show a way that you can put the “training wheels” on. What I mean by this is to make the movement easier to get started. A lot of times I have scaled options of techniques for people to begin with if the regular version is too difficult.

Do you work on something specific during your BJJ rolling? In this video from one of our Friday morning classes I was specifically working Half Guard sweeps and a slick Back Take from Honeyhole.

These techniques were specific to my current goals in Brazilian Jiujitsu.

If you want to stop BJJ training plateaus, I can’t encourage you enough to try and focus on something specific from time to time during your training.
