Today’s video is a reply to a comment I received about rolling with people in BJJ who are working around injuries.

True story, some of my best BJJ techniques have come from relaxed rolling with injured training partners. Seems crazy right? In the video I share a great example from 2019 that helped me be a more effective grappler and even win a gold medal at a competition because of a specific grip I learned during an injured roll.

I also talk about why this is kind of a secret to training as a an older Black Belt.

Hopefully the idea I share in the video serves you well if you or 1 of your training partners is trying to train around a particular injury in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Chat with you next time.

In today’s video I share a tip that came from a recent conversation I had with Renzo Gracie Black Belt Shawn Williams on our Chewjitsu Podcast. The podcast is already out. So check it out wherever you listen to podcast.

It’s also available on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTSmtpFVLcZGS7G599_vCow

Anyways, during the podcast he gave a tip on how to train more BJJ and get injured less. It’s a tip many of us (who have trained for 20+ years) have learned.

It’s a simple tip and definitely doesn’t apply to all rolling and training situations in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. But it can still be super useful to get more mat time in with less injuries.

And this is important because more mat time is what progress is built on. So more mat time and less injuries (which also means more mat time) means you’ll have more chances to work on your game.

Hope the tip is helpful.

Have your ever rolled with someone outside of a traditional Brazilian Jiu-jitsu background?

Maybe someone who has done MMA, Sambo, Wrestling, Judo, etc?

If so then you know that they grapple a little different

A different sort of cadence or style of rolling.

I found this out during my White-Purple Belt days where I began to be introduced to MMA training and would roll with people who only learned grappling through MMA.

In many cases I would get caught with submissions even through my knowledge of grappling and Brazilian Jiujitsu was superior.

Because their style and rhythm of grappling was different than mine, I had to adjust. Because where BJJ players typically fight more for position, they would just go crazy for submissions.

And I believe this is partly due to the fact that when you use grappling in and MMA situation. You have to have a sense of urgency with your techniques.

In today’s video I discuss this idea in response to our friends question who is struggling with a situation at an open mat where he feels a bit taken back by the people inside the gym.

If you’re ever grappling with someone outside of a traditional BJJ gym, then I hope this video is useful for you!

Today’s question comes from White Belt our friend who recently had a freak accident outside the gym and now has to take 1 month off BJJ training.

He’s super down about it as he’s been making a lot of progress with his BJJ. And he’s wanting to get some exercises that he can use for his down time.

In this video I steer away from this situation a bit. I know that a lot of people don’t want to lose their progress or the skill they gained in BJJ. And with a small downtime, you won’t.

But something more valuable that can come from this period of inactivity is the contrast of not being able to train.

Meaning, when you get back to training and you’re having a bad day, bomb a tournament or whatever. You can go back and think about what it was like to not even be able to train and then be thankful for the opportunity to get out there on the mats. You’re healthy and not injured and there will always be tomorrow.

This is something I picked up when I was younger and really helps give more appreciation to your BJJ training.

Thanks for watching the video!

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is often like a form of meditation for many of us. After a hard training session we often feel a stillness in our mind.

BJJ does this like very few things can.

I bring this up because our friend Josh used BJJ to deal with a lot of the issues that exist outside the gym. But right now, he’s injured and is not able to train Brazilian Jiujitsu.

And the problem with this is, he’s dealing with his father who is dying of cancer and his girlfriend just left him as well.

He wants to get back into the gym as soon as possible and asked about the type of training he should be engaged in.

In this video, I talk 1st about how I was in a very similar situation as Josh, and how I dealt with it (which wasn’t a good way).

Instead of dealing with with my mother’s passing I chose to numb myself with excessive amounts of training. To the point where I would be in the gym at 3am lifting just to exhaust myself so I couldn’t think.

At the end after me trying to get Josh to think about easing his BJJ and Lifting training schedule I give a few tips on how train without aggravating the injury.

I hope the video helps!

Is it ok to hurt your training partners during a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu session? When are you responsible for your training partner’s injury ?

The question for this video related to this question in a way.

Our friend was recently training with one of his teammates during BJJ practice. And during this practice he attempted several different submissions and attempts to finish the match.

Eventually he snagged an armbar and slowly pulled forward. After securing the position and his partner still not tapping. He began to apply pressure slowly until his rolling partner cried out in pain.

He let go and afterwards felt terrible. He asked his coach if he had messed up or if there was something to keep in mind. His coach told him that Brazilian Jiujitsu is a tough sport and accidents happen.

So Jason is basically searching to get another perspective on the event that came from his submission.

In this video I share two stories that have accidents involved in them. 1 was where I accidentally injured one of my training partners after a situation where I became upset. While I never intended to hurt him. I did so as a fault of my own negative emotions.

I also share a story where my nose was broken due to accident during a BJJ training session once. This time it was an accident which was not fueled with any sort of negative emotions.

If you’re in a similar situation. I hope the video is helpful!
