Options from the seated Kimura position when the Kimura isn’t quite happening:

– The Genie Kimura is a powerful alternative that can get the finish vs a strong and stubborn opponent

– The Tarikoplata is even more powerful and a great option if available

– The Japanese Leg Scissor Choke is a timeless classic that is underutilized these days

The Kimura Trap is a unique method in grappling of utilizing a submission as a position / transition. It tethers your opponent to the threat of the lock, forcing them into a dilemma of maneuvering between two undesirable outcomes, allowing you more time and efficiency in your offense. In this video, Prof. Jared Jessup (@professorjaredjessup & @iqjiujitsu on Instagram) and I explore some of our favorite uses of this concept and why it is so effective.

Depending on whether the opponent on bottom clasps his hands together to defend either outside or between your legs once you achieve the Kimura grip, you may be able to take the back or possibly go straight to a rear triangle.

The Kimura isn’t just a submission; it’s also a great big bloody handle you can use to manipulate your opponent’s body in space and to swing yourself around him. The swinging Kimura backtake is a showboat move but it is actually quite high percentage especially if you use the Kimura to tilt his body sideways towards the ground (which also prevents him from stepping over you and doing an armbar counter). Give it a try!
