Here are 3 competition-proven ways to shut down that escape and finish your opponent no matter how he tries to squirm out of your submission!

This video is a pretty comprehensive guide to all things escaping mount position. This can be one of the most difficult and dangerous positions to find yourself in, regardless of the context, whether self defense or sport. These escapes in this video are some of the best techniques and concepts I have found over the years for dealing with this situation. This honestly could have been much longer, but I feel as if this video contains the most important considerations, and is basically a mini-course. I hope it helps!

The highest percentage takedown in competition, whether gi, no gi or mma is the single leg. For that reason, understanding the mechanics of the single leg takedown is vital. In this video, Mike Cheney of Endeavor Defense & Fitness shows two solid setups for the single leg from an underhook and wrist tie position, one high and one low. Hope you enjoy this and get some good info from it!

Firstly, I don’t know what else to call this position and I definitely don’t claim to have invented it. This is however a fun and frustrating position with lots of great submission possibilities from it. This is a bottom cradle variation with rubber guard elements, making for a really strong position. Watch the video and let me know what you think about it after you try it out. Thanks as always for watching!

There is a principle I use all the time when discussing escaping submission attempts, whether early escaping or late escaping. I refer to this as the “Fish Hook Principle” and I explain the story behind why in the video. Most all submission escapes operate under this principle and the rest is just timing and technique, which is simplified by understanding this underlying concept. Hope this helps!
