The X Guard position in BJJ is well known for it’s sweeping ability and transitional quality. Meaning that it can link up to several other positions quickly.

A while ago I posted a video where I showed a Oma Plata from the X Guard. In the comments of that video I saw someone say that they were unaware of the fact that you could use X Guard for submissions.

Again, he said that he always thought of the position as a sweeping guard instead of the ability to submit.

In this video I show another submission setup off of a sweep from X Guard.

It’s a simple idea.

It’s a Kick Back sweep from X Guard that lands the person onto their side where we can slide right into a straight ankle lock.

The position we transition to is often called Ashi Garami but I’ve heard other names for it. Call it whatever you like, it’s a nice addition to the end of your sweep.

I also touch on the idea of using the straight ankle lock / ashi garami in IBJJF. It’s a legal position but you definitely have to be careful for the reasons I state in the video.

Hope the video is helpful to you!

This episode of the Chewjitsu podcast is full of all sorts of great nuggest of information related to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

One topic we touch on briefly is the idea of reps and how many you need to drill in order to use a technique in BJJ

We also touch on the idea of proper recovery for BJJ training and how it’s probably simpler than you thought.

I hope you enjoy the episode!

What’s the best way to help coach someone during a BJJ tournament or match?

This is today’s question which comes from Joe in the Chewjitsu Facebook group.

During the video I talk about some of the practices that have been helpful to me both as a competitor and a BJJ coach.

You might find that you do some of the things I’m talking about not doing during a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Competition.

And if that’s the case, don’t consider me automatically right. Try some of the coaching tips I give in this video and see how they work for you.

I also talk about an MMA fight and some of my past matches to give examples of why I favor these queues as a coach.

But if you ever find yourself in the situation Joe did during the Brazilian Jiujitsu tournament, and have to coach your training partners and teammates. . .

I hope the tips in this video are useful for you!

The Over Under Pass in BJJ has been one of my favorite options for Guard Passing since I was a Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

But the BJJ Over Under Pass definitely has some serious counters available for the person on the bottom if they know how to use them.

2 of the common counters to the Over Under Pass can be a “Bro Roll” and the Kimura. You may have a different name for the roll but that’s what we call it.

In this video I explain how I’ve encountered both of the problems in my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training that our friend Johnathan has had as well.

The big idea in the video is to help you avoid 2 of the mistakes or problems I had with the Over Under Pass.

So if you’re using this Guard Pass or trying to add this into your guard passing game in Brazilian Jiujitsu. I hope the video is useful!

Thanks for watching!

I received a question from a 14 year old who is interested in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. But he’s not sure if he should start training. He says this because when he went into a local BJJ gym. He was the only teenager training.

Jeff (his name), asked if he should keep training Brazilian Jiujitsu, even if he is the only teenager in his gym.

In the video response to this BJJ question. I tell a short story about an 11 year old kid who began training at our gym when I was a Purple Belt.

I go on to talk about how this 11 year old was originally somewhat ignored during classes. Because at the time we didn’t offer a Kids BJJ program. It just wasn’t something we offered. But as he showed his dedication and desire to train. Everyone took notice.

This same person would eventually go on to win the No Gi Pans and No Gi Worlds as a teenager.

This was of course about my good friend Chad Hardy.

Do you ever panic when you’re stuck in the bottom of side control? This is the issue that Bob is having.

Bob says he is the smallest person in his gym and gets stuck in the bottom of side control. And while he knows techniques to escape, he panics and cannot seem to recall the techniques because he panics.

His question is how to address this issue during his Brazilian Jiujitsu training.

In this video I discuss a couple of simple ideas and a tip to work on getting away from the panic mindset that often grips people when they are still new to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

The tip is pretty simple but will take a good deal of discipline to use it effectively.

The tip is to roll with some of your partners, and essentially let them pass and put you in a bad position like the bottom of side control. And once they are there. . . don’t try to escape.

Instead. . .

Just stay tight and don’t let them submit you. And see how long you can last. The purpose of doing this is that it will give you more time in the position. And more time in the position equals more comfort and less panic.

Once you get comfortable in bad spots, it makes it easier to relax, not panic, and use your techniques more effectively and efficiently.

I also discuss how I used this in my own training as well as how I’ve used this with my BJJ students to get them to be more effective with their escapes.

I hope this BJJ escape tip helps with your side control escapes!

Have you ever done a BJJ private lesson? How did you go about it? Did you ask the coach to solve a particular problem you were having or help you work towards a new position, or did you let them just show you whatever they wanted to show you?

This is kind of the question I received from Casey recently. He is a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu purple belt. And along wanting to travel more for BJJ. He’s also planning on getting a bunch of private lessons from various Brazilian Jiujitsu coaches.

He is hoping to expose himself to as many new BJJ techniques and information as possible.

His main questions were,
1. How do I approach a BJJ coach about a private lesson, what’s the proper etiquette?

2. What is the best approach with doing a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu private lesson, should I ask them to just show me something or should I come in with an agenda?

This is obviously relative to everyone. But I share my biggest advice with private lessons in Jiujitsu and come from the point of view of a BJJ instructor.

Hope this video is helpful!

I don’t even know what to say about the situation in this video. Our friend, T, sent in a message about a training session recently in his class. He said that while he was rolling with a young teenager. The teenager’s father screamed out “fuck him up” during the roll.

When I read this message my instant reaction was. . . no way . . . this didn’t happen. But I’ve received several messages similar to this through the videos.

I’ve also experienced a few situations where things like this have happened.

1 such situation was when I was at a BJJ tournament and a father told his son, “Don’t you fucking tap.”

It’s just disgusting. It really is. . . this is a disgusting situation that has no place in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

The weirdest thing about the situation that came from our friend’s question was that the father is a purple belt n BJJ. I find this so bizarre because most people who actually do Brazilian Jiujitsu know the struggle and understand how hard it is and in turn they are usually very supportive and encouraging rather than negative.

I also share what I think the White Belt who asked this question should do. I don’t know how helpful it will be to anyone. But maybe it’s informative in some way.

Thanks!

Want a simple grip tweak to make your Keylock better? The trick I show in this video is great for making the Keylock in BJJ tighter.

This is one I show to my White Belts in my BJJ classes because it’s a mistake I made all the time when I used the Americana in Brazilian Jiujitsu.

I would get excited and not secure the position to finish the submission effectively. I had several tournaments as a BJJ White Belt where I had this locked up and then would lose it to poor finishing technique.

My students have really enjoyed this tweak and experienced a lot of success with them during rolling and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition.

Thanks! Hope it helps.

One of my favorite submissions in Brazilian JiuJitsu is the Kimura. It’s a versatile BJJ technique that can be done from both bottom or top. As a submission or a setup to other attacks and positions. And there are so many variations of the technique itself.

And it seems to favor people with shorter stronger arms. Which is a physical quality I have.

In this video I take a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu question from Jeffrey on Twitter who inquired about tips on finishing the Kimura against someone who is pushing against his hip which prevents him from stepping over. I didn’t have a video of it but I assumed he’s trying this from side control.

In this video I show one of my favorite Kimuras to use in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I do it in BJJ competitions and rolling in the gym. I bypass the stepping over part completely in lieu of just going around to North South to execute the technique.

Just be careful with it, because they catch comes fast on this one.

If you’re looking for another variation of the Kimura in BJJ. Give this one a try. If you do, I hope it works for you!
