During my final match of the master 2/Feather division in 2010, eu estava nessa posição de “Shoud I stay or should I go”?”

Já viveu o cenário “Should I stay or should I go?” Compartilhe nos comentários ou no direct!

#tbt 2010 Imagine the score is 2-0 for your opponent, with 1’30” left in the match. You’re playing your A Game, but your opponent is very defensive, controlling the clock. He already has two penalties, and you have an advantage.

OPTION 1 – STAY Would you keep insisting on the same guard, trying to get at least an advantage point to win?

OPTION 2 – GO Or would you change tactics, do something different, switching to a plan B that fits the situation better?

If you’re an experienced competitor, you’ve lived through both scenarios. Think of a match where you stuck with your main game until the end and managed to win at the last moment. And another match where you stayed in your comfort zone, the opportunity didn’t come up, and afterward, you asked yourself, “Why didn’t I try something different?”

Many times, this is caused by mental mistake number 3: fear of making a mistake. To avoid this, step out of your comfort zone and trust your game. Sometimes it works, and when it does, it’s amazing! And when it doesn’t, at least you avoid mental mistake number 4: dwelling on the outcome. You’re at peace with your decision.

Before the first 2012 @ibjjf Master Worlds, the @ibjjf International Masters & Seniors was the main event for masters in the Federation. During my final match in the master 2/Feather division in 2010, I found myself in this “Should I stay or should I go?” position.

I pulled guard poorly at the beginning, he scored 2-0, and he started playing very defensively, controlling the clock.

With 1’30” left, he had accumulated two penalties, and I needed at least an advantage to win, so I decided to step out of my comfort zone and changed my guard system.

In the video, you see me using a two-sleeve guard, then transitioning to a cross-sleeve guard.

The fear of making a mistake, like your opponent passing, happens mostly before and during the transition, so practice your transitions a lot to minimize or close any windows of opportunity for your opponent, depending on the guard you’re switching to.

In the end, stepping out of my comfort zone was worth it, and I won with a submission.
