When I first introduced the CRYangle Choke some people were skeptical. They called it the “unicorn” and said you’ll never see it in competition. But alas the “unicorn” has now successfully been hit at Black belt in the Worlds, Pan Ams, Euros and Fight 2 Win Pro…

In this instructional CRYANGLE Essentials (from the a Headhunter instructional series) I share all the details on this amazing Choke. It’s truly the ultimate trap as it’s the only submission that gives you direct access to ALL the joints: neck / arm / leg all in one nasty submission. The CRYangle doesn’t require you to have crazy Flexibility … but rather it works even better on those annoyingly flexible partners! Now you can make them suffer .

CRYangle Essentials is ONLY available at our new On Demand site http://www.vimeo.com/Flowjitsu Get after it ninjas!

This is a sweet little move that I recently “fell into” when I was working an “americana shoulder trap”. (americana shoulder trap video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv3-SJ81IW0) In this video (like many of my videos) I show it as a “no-gi move”, even though it works for gi too. The reason I do this is that most of my moves translate to both worlds. In addition, I think it is easier to see the moves on video without the gi.

The reason I mention this is that a few of my subscribers have asked me if I train gi too because most of my videos are no-gi. The answer: I train mostly gi…probably 95% gi! I love no-gi and compete in no-gi all the time. I really believe that it’s pretty easy to transition from gi to no gi. (But nearly impossible to transition quickly from no-gi to gi because lapel / collar chokes change things considerably) The key is to add moves to your game that translate well to both worlds. A good example is the amerciana or kimura lock. Both work very well in gi and no-gi. The triangle is another great example. The triangle choke can be performed fairly easy with both gi and no-gi. The only real difference is in the placement of grips. (collar versus clinching the neck for posture control) So instead of focusing on what’s better, more realistic etc. I like to take the approach of developing tools that work well for both gi and no-gi. -Mike “spider-ninja” Bidwell

Ninjas here’s a great set-up that I have been using for sometime now. I started playing with this “leg weave” from the bottom and have developed a series of solid triangles chokes and other submissions from this position. You will also notice that I use a very different hand / leg position when I finish my triangle chokes. On all my triangle chokes I position my body at a 90 degree angle relative to parter (perpendicular). This allows for a very tight triangle choke because the angle lines you directly up with both carotid arteries. You will also notice that in the first triangle choke on this video I connect my hand over and under my partners back. This connection creates a ton of leverage to finalize the choke. If your arms are shorter and you cannot connect them, you can pull on your partners side and create comparable pressure. Give it a try!

Mike ‘Spider Ninja’ Bidwell learned this back take in 1999 from Jean Jacques Machado at an awesome seminar. Jeff Glover calls the choke the “7-year old choke”. He calls this the “Evil Ninja Choke” when executed. Trap both arms and apply pressure with the hips. It’s not a neck crank – but rather a choke. Enjoy!
