It’s not always easy to sink in that rear naked choke. Sometimes as you are digging under their neck, you fall short of being able to clasp the shoulder. When you fall short, you go into a short choke, aka the Fedor choke.

The key here is to dig your other arm’s elbow into their back as if you were going to do preacher curls off their back. Your head also pushes behind their head to help create the choking collision of his neck and your forearm.

But even the short choke can fall short if they tuck their chin in. Then we just use the same short choke mechanics for a neck crank. This one is no fun for the partner, so practice caution when using this.

Finally, if this person was so tough that you couldn’t even turn their chin to get across their neck, we rake their chin the opposite way and go into a bull dog choke. This is my best way of setting up a bull dog choke, and it is a devastating choke when done right. Just like with the RNC, keep your hips pointing down as you lift high up on the hands and drop your shoulder behind their neck.

Today’s video is about a BJJ Blue Belt who got cussed out by a Black Belt during training.

The situation happened after the Blue Belt ,who is much larger than the smaller Black Belt, used a neck crank.

He cranked on the Black Belt’s neck for nearly 2 minutes (according to his story.) Eventually the Black Belt got up and said some things that were inappropriate for the mat and did so in front of everyone.

Afterwards our friend is wondering what happened and what he did wrong.

The Blue Belt also says that he has a hard time getting people to train with him during rolling. People tend to avoid him and he’s not sure why.

I think these two separate problems are 100% related.

So in the video I talk about using Neck Cranks in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and how they can be used effectively but tend to be more of a annoyance or injury creator for most people.

I also jump into the idea of proper safety with submission in Brazilian Jiujitsu and being respectful with submissions at the point of finish.

This is important because when you have a submission, it”s the point of maximum danger for the person and must be treated with respect.

If you’re in a similar situation I hope this helps. And if nothing else I hope this video maybe helps shed some light on using submissions in a safe way. This way you can train hard but not injure your BJJ training partners.

How do you tell your partner it was a Neck Crank and not a Choke without seeming whiny or upset.

Well technically I believe what we do is actually a strangle. As the definition of strangle is . . .
squeeze or constrict the neck of (a person or animal), especially so as to cause death.

But we’ll use choke to keep it simple for this BJJ video.

In this video I got asked how to bring up the somewhat taboo topic of letting your partner know that their choke was in fact a strangle.

A lot of times people in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu dislike the neck crank and consider it a dick move. Primarily because it often just hurts and creates injury. Whereas a clean choke actually puts someone to sleep with typically no injury.

But as I talk about in the video. The neck crank is a legit submission. And in gym training it may be a smart idea to tap to them to avoid risk of injury to your neck.

But that said, I think many of us would like to have that clean choke which puts someone to sleep rather than causing them to walk around stiff as a board for a week.

And in that case I believe it’s important for BJJ practitioners to communicate with their training partners. Sometimes during the submissions themselves.

In this video I discuss how to bring up the subject of whether or not it’s a choke or crank without coming across as a sore loser.

Hope the video helps!
I know that for many of my White and Blue belts, The Twister seems to be a very complicated technique to understand. Not only the execution of it, but also the entries, since most of the regular entries are performed while you are rolling and upside-down…
But there are easier ways to do it and learn it, as I show you guys in this video, what I consider to be The Easiest Twister Entry Ever, combining 2 basic techniques.
If you can’t wrap your brain around the Twister, here is your chance to learn it the easy way and eventually start catching your opponents with it. Plus, I’m also covering in this video some details on how to take the back and establish side control. Hope you guys like it!
