The De La Riva X is an extremely powerful guard system used at the top black belt level by the likes of Nicholas Meregali and JT Torres. With many different pathways into the position it’s a great tool to slow down your opponent and limit their mobility.

This video I overview the idea of side tilting in guard. A lot of people play their guard flat on there back, and this can be very useful, but often playing on your side allows for many benefit. On your side it is easier to maintain distance, it is difficult for your opponent to flatten you to finish their pass, and you have a lot of momentum for setting up attacks. This can also make it easier to set up back takes, berimbolos, and matrix attacks.
