Are older BJJ Black Belts really even Black Belts anymore? That’s the question I basically got asked today from several friends of mine who are BJJ Black Belts and who are also getting older.

This issue they’re running into is that as they’re getting older they’re getting beaten by many of the younger Purples Belts (and other belts) who are much younger than them and focused heavily in BJJ training.

So in the video I explain my thoughts on it and the struggle that many of us will go through if we were lucky enough to do Brazilian Jiu-jitsu when we were younger and then have the continued luck of doing it as we get older.

This is a short clip from the belt promotions we did at my gym back in October 2022. In the clip you’ll see me promote one of my students to Black Belt. It’s been around 10 years since he started and he’s been one of the most consistent people on the mats even being 40 when he started BJJ and is now 50 years old. He’s had some injuries along the way and kept coming and gotten very good at Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

In the video I also share why I try to give Black Belts that I wear to my students when I promote them.
