The Reverse Kimura can also be used from Top Half Guard. This is a position most people are used to conventional Kimuras, but not reverse Kimuras. By using the Reverse Kimura to literally trap his top arm, you remove his best attacker out of the equation.

There are some nice options here that I tease in this video, such as setting up a Darce Choke, going for a leg lock, or back stepping and then knee cutting back to the pass. My favorite is the leg lock, as his best defending arm is trapped and he really can’t do anything to prevent the leg lock setup from happening.

It’s probably your shortest arm drag, as the opponents arm is already crossed over, and their back is already halfway exposed. So the amount of distance you have to cover is really small making it easier than a standard arm drag.

What’s also great about this drag is that there’s no counter arm drag, as you are too low to be redragged. For the long limbed people, you can sometimes get a body triangle right off the arm drag. But if you’re shorter and stubbier like me, lol, then you need to do a proper back take by using the same footwork as you would with a technical standup to escape your hips.

The reverse Kimura is a sneaky tool from the guard that isn’t often used. As a submission, I find it to be somewhat weak. But as a grip, I do enjoy using it quite a lot, especially for sweeps. In particular, the flower sweep with a reverse Kimura grip is very powerful. If you land strong like I did, you’ll have a really powerful mount with all sorts of finishing options.

Huge thanks to @consciouskeelan and @keithkavanagh with 10th Planet Decatur for the amazing videowork on this one. And of course to 10th Planet Huntsville for allowing us to film it there after the seminar.
•
Drew Weatherhead, in addition to being one of the funniest people I know as seen by his famous Instagram @because_jitsu, is also an amazing jiu-jitsu practitioner and teacher. His work on the reverse kimura as a position with many submission opportunities is groundbreaking. Also, we may be related. It’s a long story and it’s weird since he is Canadian and I live in Kentucky. That’s all beside the point, though. Watch this video and then check out his course and my course. You won’t be disappointed in either.
