In this video I show a way to manipulate the foot to escape Knee on Belly.

While it is being shown from Knee on Belly please keep in mind that this relationship works from a lot of different places. I’ve had a good bit of success pulling the foot in between the legs for a long time, primarily when my partner/opponent tries to hide their foot from the outside Single or when I try to grab the ankle. When they try to pivot the foot away it becomes easily accessible.

When attempting this move as it is being shown the hardest part will be grabbing the ankle. Expect to be crossfaced during the transition and focus on getting your belly to the floor rather than turning into them. It will be a battle, but the more elevation you get with your body the more power is in this grip.

In the next video I show a very slick entry into this that makes it much easier, but knowing the mechanics of this movement and the pathway to the hands will make the other set up much easier.

In this video I show a medium-low percentage counter when someone is hugging you on bottom.

It is important to note that good people do not typically hug from that bottom position, however, inexperienced and/or strong opponents may do this as an attempt to slow down the movement or delay a transition into the far arm being isolated and/or attacked.

With that being said, it is important that we have a series of techniques that teach people how to deal with inexperienced resistance. This is the 3rd of 4 techniques that worked throughout the week and it can work well in a lot of different attacking sequences.

The last technique in the sequence is a transition to mount (not filmed) and is not difficult to do. The transition towards North/South will open up the space by the hips to make an easy transition into mount and can be figured out fairly easily.

as a side note, the highest priority should be given to maintaining top position, especially against someone that is going to try and hug you from the bottom like this. Throughout all of these transitions you should be looking for ways to base so that you don’t get rolled over the far side.

In this video I show a relationship between the legs that I’ve found a lot of use in. From time to time I like to use the Rolling Back Attack or the Twister Roll set up. This is similar in concept but totally different in execution.

I’ve really been enjoying laying on the legs specifically. This video doesnt do the position justice in my opinion because the majority of my weight is put onto the legs in very controlling manner. If your opponent/partner is waiting for the front roll to come they will be surprised when you slowly and methodically move your hips away with that pant control. My experience with this move has been pretty fantastic.

With that being said, when I attempted to show this to some of my students some of them got it immediately, while others really struggled with the relationship of the legs.

The power is in the spacing of the leg. This means that you can make the space by moving your hips back rather than kicking them away with the leg. If your partner/opponent is feeling to tight to your hips and there is no pocket for them to fall then you need to focus on moving your hips away rather than kicking with the leg (although there will still be tension on the leg).

Lastly, the hooking and binding feature on the leg only becomes available when they are partially broken down. This means that you will have to use that pant grip to help pull them partially over. You should feel your foot lock into place extremely securely while only using one leg. This gives you an extra leg to help continue to break them down. When done correctly it has some aspects that feel very much like the Lock Down position with the legs but you’ll only be using the one leg.

1

In this video I show the second of a 3 part attacking series. This is a great way to enter for the armbar off of the previous videos Cross Collar Choke.

The Cross Collar Choke and the Armbar are both high percentage moves on their own, but when you put them together in a combination attack it really makes your opponent commit to a defense, and this is where you can change directions of attack.

A couple of really powerful things to note in this video,

1. Make sure that you have the downward pressure with your knee on the top of the shoulder. This happens in the pivot as you’re laying your body on your opponents. My first demonstration partner only locks his hands and you can see that some of my problem rotating around the outside of the shoulder is becuase his elbow is exposed, you can then see when I switch partners to give a different look at the move that it is less of a problem. The more that they commit to crossing the arms to defend the choke the easier the Armbar is.

2. Make sure that you turn your body and lay on the outside of your thigh. This does a few really important things, but mainly you want to make the leg that comes over the head light so that you can clear the head with that leg before you butt hits the floor. This makes it very difficult to be stacked while also maintaining weight on your partner.

3. Also make sure to come through at the wrist for the armbar. Pulling at the wrist can sometimes overcome the hands being clasped to defend the armbar without having to do anything else, just pulling hard at the wrist.

Play with these techniques together and then when I post the 3rd video next week this will have a lot more value as a comprehensive set of attacks.

In this video I show a variation the Cross Collar Choke with the arms being completely straight. There are a lot of different ways to do a cross collar choke, and I personally use a lot of different methods. This is one of my favorite ways to do the Cross Collar Choke as it doesnt burn my grips and it’s highly effective.

Notice the head placement on the mat. Correct basing on the hairline is extremely important, both for safety AND effectiveness. This will take some getting used to as we have been conditioned to maintain weight on our butt in mount rather than our hips and abdominal muscles.

Try it out and let me know what you think.

In this video I show an aggressive flop pass. This is a very competitive pass that pairs well with a lot of other open guard passes. It takes some practice with the timing and the pathway for the legs but once you have drilled it, this pass is highly effective.

One of the things that I had to stress during the class is the pathway for the leg that is on the outside. This pass is NOT a Back Step or Long Step. If you do it this way (and it looks very similiar) then you will find that your opponent can turn their knees towards you and you may find yourself in guard a lot. Rather than it being a back step, make it about the pathway of the outside leg behind the knee behind the knee pit.

I included a short collection of my students practicing the movement and you will see that there are people of all belt rank practicing this and they all have various levels of hip movement. You should really strive to flair the hips but not in the backstep motion.

lastly, you will have to kill your own posture to be able to do this effectively. Notice that I lean my head forward and bring the trunk of my body parallel with the shin. This helps greatly and is not talked about in the video.

In this video I show a transition from the North/South Choke to the Paper Cutter. I also provide a few tips on how to finish this technique.

Often when I see this move performed it crushes the windpipe. While this can be a bi product of doing the move, it should be a strangle first (blood choke). Make sure to understand that the collar is one piece of cloth and the collar grip under the shoulder has the ability to tighten the choke as well.

Make sure your hips are turned towards your opponents and your only on one cheek. The pathway around the head is very important and adds a lot to the choke. Check it out and try it both ways during drilling and you will see there is a clearly better choke.

With that being said, it’s not that bad of a thing for you, when you really launch your opponent. Just make sure that you practice the transition a few times as you will not have a lot of time to make the transition.

In this video I show a way to get a dominate overhook grip while controlling the outside arm. This was part of a series where we learned that far side wrist control can allow you some really great hip movement.

I first saw this technique on another youtube channel (trainfightwin) but I cant seem to find the guys name to give him credit.

I have a series that I use off of this grip and I rarely overhook unless I have this grip.
