2 Part Lesson – With no grips or controls holding your opponent and your guard in open empty space, you’ve recognized his intentions of attacking your vulnerable foot. Open your hip and point your knee down to reveal the heal of your foot as you kick against the opponent’s center with your non-captured leg to free your ankle. If the opponent has crossed your leg and fell back, remove his legs from your path and latch onto his hands and upper body until you can safely scoot around out of his submission attempt.

Some of jiu-jitsu’s stars have interesting nicknames such as Buchecha, which means fat cheeks (due to being overweight) and Preguica, meaning sloth or lazy. In the case of Luis “Limao” Heredia, he was given his nickname by a friend who saw Luis kiss a girl and she (allegedly) made a face like she had just tasted a sour lemon. With friends like these, who needs enemies. (LOL *kidding*)

As a true pioneer in the sport, Luis has seen it all in terms of the rise of jiu-jitsu; especially of that within the United States. Four years before America really saw what jiu-jitsu was thanks to Royce Gracie’s involvement in UFC 1, Luis traveled here alongside the Gracies to set up shop in Los Angeles, CA and never look back. He has trained alongside many great practitioners as well as MMA fighters. Eventually Luis felt he needed a change of scenery and now runs an amazing academy in Maui, HI. You can find out more information about him and his academy at https://www.mauijiujitsu.com, as well as like it on Facebook under Maui Jiu-Jitsu Academy.

In this video Luis demonstrates counters to your opponents own counters when unable to get the single leg and then miss the inside trip, but finish with an ankle pick. Assisting him with the demonstration is Stefan Kocev.

For more information on Luis Heredia, a break down of this move and others he demonstrates, more great techniques from other high level practitioners, news, product reviews, nutritional advice, conditioning programs, supplements information, and more check out issue #30 of Jiu-Jitsu Magazine.
Most of us found out about jiu-jitsu by watching a young, lanky, expressionless Brazilian named Royce Gracie somehow defeat opponents using little movements we couldn’t comprehend via a VHS cassette. This is typical in the US; however, jiu-jitsu was already seeded for years in Brazil, so it was interesting to find out that Lucas Leite learned about the art by watching that same cassette. Though this started him on his path and he was learning from Ryan Gracie, Lucas saw it as a hobby at best and quit for a year due to lack of motivation. Eventually he returned, but due to a family move, he decided to train under Leonardo Vieira and his future forever changed, as he is now at the highest level and a decorated competitor under Checkmat. A regular on the podium is awesome in itself, but considering that Lucas competes at heavyweight, two weight categories above his natural weight division (lightweight), makes it astounding! Recently on a beautiful warm, sunny day in Orange County, CA, we had the pleasure of chopping it up again with the 5x World Champion. Like he did in issue 3, Lucas showed us a variety of ways to work the half guard, as he’s known for it being his bread and butter because he’s so amazing at using the position. Once again we were treated to a plethora of amazing goodies and were like kids in a candy store with big wide eyes. Checkout http://www.lucasleitebjj.com if you’d like to find out more about him or get information about his school.

In this video Lucas transitions from knee shield half guard, to X-guard and then takes the back. Assisting him is his brown belt, Patricia Fontes.
